Anyone know what type of metal the cvt boss slide is made of ? ***Material, any heat treat, coatings, or surface treatments ? picture is here : www.partsforscooters.com/165-11-Variator-BossLooking at having one made for custom / proper fit. Thanks.

Chrome alloy steel is what I recall. Instead of having a custom one made you may just want to consider the complete Hoca set instead with the 115 mm drive face. I was shocked by the results when I put one in my old Lance Vintage with the standard 12 gram rollers that came with it. www.partsforscooters.com/169-24www.partsforscooters.com/169-6

If your trying to make a tighter fit to the variator I wouldn't suggest it at all . I once had a boss lock up in the variator " it was caked with a black coating" and I had to pound it out with a hammer . It only happened to me once but I have never used that boss again . It was a stock boss with a Koso variator . I had two others so no big deal . I figure It may have been slightly to tight and the belt dust collected in between the two.

The bushing it rides in is a bigger issue since it is an Oilite or Boston Bronze bushing that the boss slides in which many mess up by using a cleaner (such as brake of carb cleaner) on it removing the permanent lubricant imbedded in the porous metal of the bushing. Once you do that you need to replace the variator. At best you use a rag soaked in a penetrating oil such as WD40 to clean the bushing and boss being careful not to leave the boss excessively oily so that it will impact the belt..

I usually just wiped the boss off with a rag , just to get the dust off of it . I never had a problem but for that one . I never used it again , it's actually still in a bucket on the porch .

There is no bushing on the Variator, the BOSS slips into the Variator and into the back plate and the whole assembly slides onto the crank up to the raised part of the crank where it tigthens up on. If a lot of heat happens to be generated sometimes the expansion of the metals will make the boss lock up on the crank. Alleyoop

I thinks he is calling the inside of the variator a bushing . I wasn't sure what it was made " he says it's bronze " . Anyway mine actually locked up in the variator itself , even after it cooled it was stuck and had to be pounded out . Lol .

I've never thought of it as a bushing and I know what u mean about others maybe getting confused , I alwAys looked at it as just the inside of the variator .

I thought I saw something that looked like bronze or brass there but was not sure if it was replaceable or not...

Depends on the brand and model of the variator. The service station manual warns of this in BOLD print.

There is no bushing. The boss does two things, at idle it provides a roller for the belt to ride on. Then it provides a guide as the inner pulley moves out. It has to be a little sloppy because of the dramatic heat differentials that Alley alluded to. Otherwise the inner pulley would freeze up on it. Crud would also freeze it up. The weights release their own lubricant on the ramp plate. But the effect of that black substance is like oil, it absorbs dirt and turns into grime. Clean your parts with ethanol which is rubbing alcohol. It's a good solvent but not caustic. You can even clean weights and sliders with it. Do NOT lubricate the ramp plate, weights, or outside of the boss. Where the inner pulley rides and turns I use a little hi temp grease but not much. Remember, grease gets runny with heat and goes out with the spin of the variator.
