Hiya! I'm a real noob (purchased 1st scooter 4 days ago), and would very much appreciate some advice re: insurance. I bought a 50cc GMW RX50 scooter for my daughter to ride on surface/in-town streets in her open college campus. Can anyone offer some thoughts and advice on insurance? Should I get medical & liability as well as just replacement? Thanks, Y'all.

howdy, welcome to the forum. i'm not qualified to give advice but will give an opinion. any policy will require liability with some level of medical coverage. in our area it is also prudent to get uninsured motorist coverage as well. I don't carry any comprehensive coverage though I don't think it is all that expensive. for me in Oregon the liability etc. costs about 100 a year. there's my 2 cents worth. that said, your state may not require insurance at all for a machine under 50cc. your call , then
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

Jut my .02:
Even if your state dosnt require insurance at 50cc, I would carry min liability, accidents do happen. Also the other thing is how much it costs to replace the scooter if it was stolen. Those are easy to take and depending on where the school is may be something to worry about.
Congrats on the kid to school though! Good luck and welcome to the board

Depends on a lot of factors. Some health policies no longer cover injuries sustained while riding regardless of the displacement of the bike while others will only cover you if wearing a DOT helmet with face shield/goggles, riding jacket, long pants, gloves and boots. You have to read the fine print.
You should have liability or a bond of financial responsibility if that is appropriate in your State since people are sue happy and will go after you if they can claim your daughter caused an accident which then had a negative effect on their quality of life.
Just because your State does not mandate insurance does not make it a good idea to ride without it. There is no law that forces you to brush your teeth either but...

I have extended under and noninsurance coverage , road side assistance , med pay , which pays for the ER should I wreck up to 10k , for 145 a year from Progressive . Normally it was 89 dollars for just liability . RA is a deal at only 10 a year with no having to pay and wait to get a refund like with AAA . You can also get PIP personal injury protection as well .
If there is a motorcycle training class in your area I suggest taking it since she is a noob and may reduce your premium costs .
Make sure to get a GOOD helmet , gloves and boots too !

I went with Progressive too and since I had another policy with them I got a $75 discount so it only cost $50 per year.

My agent had me not get medical since I have health insurance. Other than that I have full coverage.

Thanks, all, for both the warm welcome and the advice. My current home & auto insurer quoted me $87 PER MONTH. That's more than for full coverage with high medical limits for either of my cars! For a vehicle costing less than $1500 and which goes no faster than 30 mph or so. Seemed a bit.... excessive.

You might ask them why they wanted to charge that much..... after you do some shopping for insurance for the scooter elsewhere and likely find a much lower rate. The insurance companies use formulas based on certain criteria to calculate rates. X aged female in a particular college town using it to commute X amount of miles during certain days and hours may be factors. But jeez $87/mo? it's not like it's some sort of high $$ high HP "sport bike" ridden in the bad side of town by an early 20 something male with a record of DUI & speeding tickets with a license that currently has restrictions on it. I think they're jerking you around. At $87/mo you could get another scooter paid for in just over 17 months. That's less than a year and a half! and that's just wrong!!! just to be sure..... did you confirm with them that it was $87 per month and not for 6 months or per year? right?

Mine w/out med plus one claim is something around $ for the year. Used to be less, rates went up across the board, sigh. Call your agent back and ask why it's so high. Then shop around and see what others offer like Bandito suggested, then call your agent back armed with figures. >'Kat
