Bit of advice on locks:
-Do not get a standard square lock with a u-shaped bolt, they can be opened with an aluminum can.
-Do not get a u-lock with a round key, they can be opened with a plastic bottle cap (master lock u-locks are keyed different and are safer).
-Do not get a combination lock with 4 tumblers, they can be opened by a child in less than 5 minutes, and a good adult in less than one minute.
All the above can be verified on youtube, there are tons of videos on lock picking, and many locks are so easy to pick that they are not worth the metal they were made out of!

I ride to work and to shop often as my wife and I only have one car and one scooter. I am the only scooter driver. I park in auto parking spots, in bike racks. Any place that is handy. I live in the Dallas Texas area.

I park I the closet spot. Sometimes on sidewalk outside store but that's rare. I don't use any locks, well on occasion a disc alarm. If I had to chain it up everywhere I'd stop ridding.
Maybe I've just been lucky but I've never had a problem.

In a nice dry parking deck. There are usually a few motorcycles in the deck also, but no other scoots.

Jerry's right about rules depending on property owners.
First time I drove mine to work, I parked right outside our backdoor, so all my friends could go see. Landlord's henchman came by while the manager was outside on break and told him I couldn't park there. He explained why, but henchman insisted he needed to go inside and tell me to move it. Manager told her to go away 'cause he was on break, besides that this was a one-day-only parking.
Then again, same hench also told Panera's to inform their CUSTOMER she couldn't park her scooter locked to the lightpost beside the bench she ate at. Panera's manager pretty much told hench to shove off 'cause he wasn't about to tell any customer they couldn't park somewhere to patronise his business.
This was the same henchman who informed me there was no place at all to install any sort of bike rack/scooter parking. Despite there's a very large open area of sidewalk a store over from Panera's. So our bicycling customers have to lock their bikes to the ashcan or trashcan. Lovely landlord.

I have a retired buddy who just loves to screw with idiots. He owns a small hardware store just to have something to do. He has a 30 foot cable lock he made up just to watch fools trying to unlock his 50 cc scoot. He weaves the cable through the spokes on both wheels, the forks as well as a couple places on the fame. Then he waits by the front window and if someone is fool enough to try stealing the scoot, they get really frustrated.....He then goes out with an unloaded pistol and holds them at gunpoint. So far he has turned 5 guys and one girl over to law enforcement officials.
I think the word is out after a reporter from the local paper was there to capture the slime ball on film.

I used to lock my bike to a column thru the grab handle. I decided that a thief could more easily saw through the cable when looped thru the grab handle. Lately, I loop the cable much lower, thru my back wheel. The thief now must hold the cable up, off the pavement, in able to saw through it. The rear wheel cannot be removed without first removing the exhaust.

Freezing works on almost any metal. Here is a video showing it done on a cheap bike lock by a couple of guys who have never done it before, just to show how easy it is. Real thieves have colder compressed gases to work with, and can shatter most locks or cables in less than a minute!

A unloaded gun waved around here will get you shot in an instant. If this is a true story this guy should be in jail.

I park in a lot provided for employees....The bike is under constant surveillance by a guard who processes a AR-15, a shotgun and a 357 magnum........I work at a prison. ;-)

Why do "honest" people post videos like that? I mean, seriously. "Oh, just in case you locked your own bike and then forgot the combo, here's what you can do." Yeah, right, sure. Why not tell it like it is? "I'm going to post this video on how to break a lock 'cause I like being on the 'net, and I'm going to tell you not to steal by using what I show you but of course I've just given you the knowledge to do exactly that."
"Mischief" indeed. What a little jerk.
Of course, like Jerry said, real thieves have "proper" equipment to steal. If they decide on your bike they're gonna get it. The main purposes of locks and stuff are to keep honest folk honest and to make thieves reconsider you bike for another that will take even less time to snatch.

Here in southern MD (a summer resort boating area on the Chesapeake Bay) the parking spaces are tight (small) even for my Toyota Corolla. No way you could get 4 bikes in one unless you stacked them up . Most bikes park two in a space. Weekends ALL parking is tight but weekdays in does not usually present that big of a problem.
