Scooter is a 2008 Piaggio Fly 150. When the bike has been ridden for a while or when it is cold and has just started it will shake when accelerating from a stop and not want to go. If I feather the throttle it will stop vibrating and accelerate. Almost feels like something is slipping. Any ideas?

Check the clutch pads they may be sticking and or glazed or both. If glazed get some sandpaper and lightly take the glaze off the pads also lube the Arm Pads where they rotate in and out on the STUD.

Possibly it could also be a worn belt. Either way you need to remove the CVT cover and take a look.

How many miles are on the bike?
That Piaggio engine is pretty bullet proof and the clutch should be good for 20,000+ miles with the belt/rollers good for around 12,500 miles.

It all depends on how one rides. Many abuse their scoots rodding them not doing any maintenance or checking things. Then when something breaks or wears down due to not doing any maintenance you hear about it on the forums.

It has 3885 miles but it was not taken care of well before I got it and the previous owner let it sit for 2 years when I bought it. Also parts of my drive I have to go 50 mph. I will check it out when I get home. I bought a 250 that I am trying to fix because I think my drive is too hard on this one.

I dunno. Mine sat for almost two years (although plugged into a Battery Tender Jr) and started up second try just fine.
Also, doesn't the Fly also have the bigger tires? If so, then 50 shouldn't be too hard on it. My 200cc should hit 70, supposedly and I'll just take Piaggio's word for that one. But I suppose if there's lots of uphills, that might put too big a strain on your Fly.

If it sat for that long I would clean out the jets in the carb . How does the tread on the tires look ? Check for loose nuts and bolts . The tires do not come balanced so there will be some shimmy , more so on worn tires . Rollers can develop flat spots from wear and make a rattle sound like a bearing . Some belts wear out faster than others . I had a TaoTao with a Gates belt it lasted around 4k and it broke while my Echarm I changed it 12k and it still had some meat on it .
If one is too easy on takeoff the clutch pads can " almost " fully engage and and get glazed .

After sitting for 2 years it first needed an oil and gear lube change and the needle bearings on the clutch will need to be packed with grease. Depending on where you are located the clutch bell may need to have any rust cleaned up and could be pitted. The drive belt after sitting in the same position for 2 years could also have the arc from where it was sitting on the pulleys now molded to in and may need to be replaced. At that mileage Piaggio recommends checking the rollers too. The clutch should could have belt debris from that old belt building up on them too and may need to be blown out.
As mentioned that carb probably at least needs to have a few tanks of gas treated with a good fuel system cleaner such as Berryman's to clear it along with the fuel pump of any sludge etc from fuel evaporation and ethanol degradation.
Be mindfull to use the proper grades of Synthetic Motorcycle Oils and Lubes reccomended by Piaggio. They were very specific about not using Automobile lubricants in their scooters when I called their main office and spoke with a factory tech on this topic. I does not matter that there is no wet clutch in the bike as there are other properties specific to the motorcycle lubes that the engine design requires according to the factory.

The bike did sit in a climate controlled garage for the 2 years it was not in use so I'm not too worried about pitting or anything like that. With all the rain we are having I'm going to have a look at the belt and clutch since I can't ride it. When I got it I removed and rebuilt the carb, replaced all the fuel and vacuum lines as well as removed and cleaned the fuel tank and completely removed and capped off the EGR while running a fuel overflow line down under the scooter. All fluids have been changed with fully synthetic Piaggio recommended fluids and I removed and balanced the tires (yes it does have the big tires which I love). I have gone over it with a fine tooth comb and have been riding it for close to 8 months problem free its just that this little vibration is bothering me because I don't want to get stranded. I will probably go ahead and order a new belt and rollers for it since I might as well replace them. It doesn't look like getting to the belt on this will be as easy as my GY6 scooters. I love the scooter I just wish it had more power. I drove it 3 hours yesterday to my buddies house over half the drive at 50+ mph and for being a little 150 it was comfortable and held with the traffic just fine. I had no issues with the scooter what soever. I will say my belt is probably wearing faster than most because I am a musician and have built a custom aluminum single wheel trailer that I pull behind the scooter to carry my instruments. I'll update on what I find I'm sure I'll need more help once I get it apart.

WARNING--THREAD HIGHJACK ... because I am a musician and have built a custom aluminum single wheel trailer that I pull behind the scooter to carry my instruments. Just wondering, 'cause I'm a musician too. I'm guessing one instrument is a harp. What else do you play, that you haul them around together? Me, I play flute/picc, and I play piano. But I usually don't have to cart around a piano  . >'Kat |

It's actually not a full size harp lol. I play guitar, banjo, autoharp, and mandolin. I can fit them all in the trailer with careful packing. Oh a trailer on a Fly potentially off an on for 8 months kind of changes things. You may need to cut the CVT maintenance intervals in half now and every 1,500 miles clean and check the filter in the CVT to help keep it as cool as possible when pulling the trailer. Been thinking about way to transport my Fender F35, bowed psaltry and possible a consertina on the bike without resorting to a trailer. Made the Psaltry myself and have been considering building a mandolin or the larger mandola or bousouki. Making a bowed dulcimer has been in the back of my mind for a while too. |

As far as instrument transportation I have been working on an option for my 250 where I am building a frame that comes off the side of the rear rack and I am going to mount a guitar case to this frame. That way I can attach my guitar and mandolin to the rack because the trailer drastically slows the scooter. I got the idea from one I saw on a harley one time although mine won't be nearly as nice. I bought a cheap case from guitar center and I pulled the liner out and am mounting it with two screws and 2 large fender washers to distribute the load on the case. I play in a band and we practice about an hour from my house so I'm always trying to figure out a way to get my stuff there with the scooter so that I can save on the gas money.
