I have loaded a few apps on my iPhone and I keep getting different top speeds when using them. I have more then one running at a time so I can to get get a average.
App 1 tells me 42.1 App 2 tells me 43.9 App 3 tells me 45.7
What apps have you found to be accurate?

It's app #2.....That's the average ...43.9.....go with it.
I use My Tracks, but that's on the Android platform. My Tracks give you a Maps playback of your route, elevation, average speed, stopped time......etc.

Make sure your device is in GPS mode, and not getting it's location from the cell phone towers. My Android phone can triangulate it's location from cellphone towers, but can easily be one or two blocks off the correct location. Although it can locate the cellphone tower it's connected to quite accurately, it can not calculate it's spot exactly using the data it receives from the towers.
When GPS is enabled, it's much easier for my phone to find it's exact location, often within half a block correct. Especially when I start moving, it correctly finds the road I'm going on.
Using your 2/3/4G network to triangulate your location may also affect speed readings.

Phone ap GPS is really not a accurate speed measuring device. Fact is, no GPS is accurate while in motion. Even the $10k devices the experts use need to be stationary for a significant amount of time to be truly accurate (elevation is the hardest part). My current phone, the Samsung Galaxy Victory, will show which room of my house I'm in within two minutes. That being said, I've tested two Android phone's GPS results against car speedometers, and they are definitely accurate enough for use as a speedometer, better if the values are read over a quarter mile.

Speaking of accuracy and GPS, On October 2, I changed a setting in MyTracks to take data points more often (3ft vs. 32ft) That morning my GPS said I hit 61.51MPH for the top speed. The morning before -October 1- also was a little bit higher at 58.27, still on the 32ft recording.
Every other morning ride, my top speed is just 55MPH-ish.
Then I realized we had solar flare activity. Darn it!

Prefer risking a sub $100 Garmin to the cost of replacing a SmartPhone or Iphone plus the Garmin screen works well with motorcycle gloves while the phone screens require special gloves to use them.
