Hey recently I have been watching a lot of Scooter racing videos and I've noticed there are people with shifters and gears on there bikes. I've been totally drooling over the idea of gears on my already modded out moped and was wondering if there is anyone more knowledgeable than me on this matter because I simply cant find anything else on it anywhere..... And would love to know if it's available without going totally custom like fabricating and welding and ect ect...

No, a gy6 is a gy6. All the same configuration, and cvt transmissions. What you see there is a LIFAN motor, a totally different beast. With EXTENSIVE frame modifications,a professional fabricator MIGHT be able to squeeze one into a rucus,or a chinese scoot. BUT WHY?

I've seen a number of small, to large Chinese motorcycles with Lifan engines. I'm no expert, but I believe those "clutch & gears" engines show up in singles from around 50cc to 250cc, and in V-twins of 250cc, and maybe more sizes.
It WOULD be quite a feat to swap one of these into a scooter frame, though possible. I also believe you could probably remove the CVT portion of the GY6 engine, and, mount a sprocket to the crank (where the variator used to bolt on) and then run a primary chain to a motorcycle transmission. Old Harley Davidson big twins use a separate transmission, with the clutch and kick starter integral to the tranny. These would be "overkill" on a 150, but certainly "doable". A diligent search might turn up a vintage British-made 3 or 4 speed tranny with clutch and kick-start integral. These were commonly used on many smaller Brit cycles, AND the American "Mustang" scooter, and "Whizzer" mopeds.
Something like that would be perfect for your use. Problem is, they would be OLD, probably requiring repair, RARE meaning "collector-grade-expensive" and hard to find parts for. You could also check into "shifter karts" and see if there are separate transmissions available.
On a GY6 putting out only 10 hp or less, the manual tranny wouldn't gain much advantage in performance over the CVT... But... I fully understand the "cool-factor"! And, mounting a separate tranny behind a chopped-off GY6 should be simpler than modding a scooter to accept a modern unit-construction engine/transmission.
It's STILL a LOT of work though. And NOT cheap... You might also consider taking a used small motorcycle with the engine/transmission you like, and "morphing" it into a scooter. Sort of your idea in reverse! The most noticeable difference between the scooter and the motorcycle is the wheel-size. Replacing the large-diameter cycle wheels with 10-13" scooter wheels would set the format. Then, cutting and modding the upper frame into a credible scooter might be easier and less expensive than motor -swaps. A junk scooter could donate the bodywork, seat and such, and you could tweak the top of the old cycle frame to accept the scooter parts.
I've seen Cushman scooters with Harley engines... No reason you couldn't make a 50 to 250cc cycle into a clutch n' gears scooter!
Good luck!

I love the Lambretta with the RD350 2T stuffed in.
I think with a decent shop and a few tools I could make a liquid cooled Ninja 250 or 300 motor hide under my ITA150 body panels. Including shifting (by hand). It would look fairly normal. But it wouldn't sound the same! Probably get the same mpg if I rode conservatively.

I have ridden a Piaggio with a 4 speed twist grip and manual clutch . It was a lil weird at first as I am so used to a toe shifter and had not used a twist grip except on bicycles . A scooter dealer in my town has a 50 with a 4 speed toe shift semi auto clutch which I do want to take it for a spin just to see how it does and the engine is not covered up so putting on a BBK is way easier that others . I will get my card out my phone and post a pic in a bit .

In Indiana a 50 cc scooter is only allowed to have a CVT type transmission. Any thing with a manual transmission regardless of cc is considered a motorcycle. I have seen a couple of scoots with manuals, they were chopper looking scoots, one was even 50 cc's and he gave Fawkes ( When Fawkes was a Stroker ) a good run with that manual. As he was able to decide when to shift, that allowed him to stay in a specific gear longer or shorter time to get his speed.
However it was considered a small motorcycle by Indiana law. This man didn't have it plated, and should he be pulled over, it could be very bad legally.

I recently saw a Lifan motorcycle for sale on the local Craigslist. The ad mentioned it had a GY5 engine. Makes it sound like it's a GY6 with gears.
