Yup! there's the inner race! Bwahhahahaha! One sad little ball all by it's lonesome! I'm impressed in that I can honestly say I've never ever seen bearings completely fail like that. Or seen anyone (DPSO) completely ignore the noise that must have been making before the balls all decided to go their separate ways. Fair bet that all the bearings in the rear end are done and will need to be replaced. The DPSO must not have replaced the shipping oil with fresh gear oil. Pull the wheel. Separate the housing. Chase down all those balls and hope that the gear teeth are all still in good shape. Save the parts when you strip it down. Any local bearing supply place should be able to match the bearings by measuring the dimensions if you can't find an online package somewhere. --> www.partsforscooters.com/search-results?keywords=bearings

Back to a question from the original post. The big case with the belt in it doesn't have any lube. But, the small compartment in the back with the gears in it does, (or at least should). but it's only filled and inch or two at the bottom. So you may or may not see any through the hole where the clutch shaft was. 100ml is usually all you need.

Thank you for the pictures that showed that you are correct the wheel has to come off to get at the inside of the tranny from the right side of the CVT. Alleyoop

Count the number of teeth on the one I labled this way if you want to put in taller gearing you know what was in there. Alleyoop I think its a 15/51 combo, but I may have missed counted.

My question is, how many little ball-bearings are supposed to be in there, and where'd all the rest end up?

Buy or borrow "Blind Hole Bearing Puller" to remove those. Maybe rental at Autozone. Maybe local tool rental.

[replyingto=pmatulew]pmatulew[/replyingto]Great advice got one from advanced auto.. Pulled them right out... All but one, fortunately it was in good shape with no signs of metal shavings. I was able to order new bearings from my local napa..
HOWEVER they only had sealed bearings, can I use them or should I pop the seals off??
Thanks again for all of your guys help.

Remove the seals.Take out as much of the grease as you can. Clean with wd40, and soak it with weight oil before you put them in.Did you get the wheel off? you need to change that bearing too. ;D

[replyingto=salracer]sailracer[/replyingto]No, but that bearing seems to be ok as well.. No crunching no noise.. I'm gonna get it back together and see what it does..
I figured I needed to unseal the bearings, thought they would get to hot without oil cooling them down..

Why would a sealed bearing get too hot when its packed in grease. Leave it alone it's designed to be sealed don't change anything. You gear case doesn't get all that hot and I'm certain unsealing that could lead to an unhappy day...

It Calls for unsealed bearings. Its contantly bathed in oil. sealed bearings are meant for "dusty environments.Beleive me, I've worked on hundreds of gearboxes of all types and sizes. ;D While you are absolutely right, they are designed that way, they are not designed for this application. they are better in free air, or where they are not constantly oiled.
