Actually, scootn, quilted liner and under-armor is nice when it's 35° out. Or heated gear.

Where are you in NM? My Dad lives in Belen, and I don't recall him getting THAT cold. Of course, he's also not exposed on a bike--at most he'll go on a walk which is a bit slower than you probably go....

Not a bad list rocky but I would spend more than $50 on a helmet especially if its modular... Still a 5 year warranty on the $50 helmet however I went with the better at $99. Just wanted to be show that if you were on a budget that you could get geared up at reasonable cost. No need to spend $1,000+ to get some basic protection for street use.

I'm with you rocky but if you go for budget helmets, get a regular full face the plastic latches on those inexpensive modulars are known to fail at very unfortunate times (during a crash). Warranties are often in place simply because they know % (or more) people will never even bother with them not because they are sure of anything.

I use Cycle Gear since there is a physical store in my location and they honor the warranty over the counter. They even replace lost receipts when you need one for a warranty claim for up to a year in the stores and then can order a replacement receipt from corporate after that. They also give you 7 days to exchange a helmet if you find after riding with it that it is not working for you. Have not yet had a negative experience dealing with the local store here in Tampa Bay.

I have a couple armor jackets. I bought the Xelement from leather up for $50 and it was ok. It was protective but not super comfortable and decent for hot weather. It is certainly worth $50.
But I went into a local motorcycle store and tried on some of the spendy ones. I liked a Tour Master, it was a great jacket but it was around $250. Great armor, soft other padding, great fit, zip in and out rain AND insulated liners so it was all season. Still did not want to spend $250. Did a google search on the Tour Master and the jacket model (can't remember) and a bunch of ads came back for closing out the last years model. The color choices were limited, and so were sizes, and the exterior pattern was a little different but basically the same jacket for $80 shipped. Awesome jacket, great deal.
It has armor on the spine where the Xelement has terribly cheap foam, and it has extra padding patches where the Xelement has none. The shoulder and elbow armor pads in both are level three and feel about the same to be honest, but the Tour Master is a FAR better jacket for the extra $30. I would not tell somebody to skip out on buying an Xelement over nothing, but the extra money for a closeout was worth every penny.
If you try on a couple of the spendy name brands ones for fit and to see what you like, you can still get one cheap if you look around and get really good quality for not that much more than the ones on Leather Up. So many motorcycle gear closeout places online it is silly.

Mine is a Tour Master Intake Air 2, I think the Intake Air 3 is the current model. But if you can't find that model, just go to a big store and try on a bunch of different ones, sooner or later you will find one of those on closeout online.
Tour Master Intake Jackets are generally small so look at the sizing chart and buy one size bigger than recommended or find a store to try them out.

It makes me sad to see you guys using a small business owner like that. If you aren't going to buy a jacket from them it seems unethical at best to go and use their stock and staff to size one then walk out the door. Either buy online or at the dealer but to use their services (the reason their prices are a little higher) and then buy from their competition to save a bit of change is messed up. Sorry but I think all this type of dealing will result in some sad faces in the future when there are no local guys because you knowingly used their time like this with out any intention of purchasing something. Shame on you and shame on you for suggesting someone else should do the same thing.

I'm not going to suggest what you wear for protection but you need to wear SOMETHING.
The most overlooked piece is footwear. Overlooked more than headgear. Many don't want a helmet because wearing one isn't cool, but I guess being dead is? I know that for some, it's a matter of not wanting to be told what to wear. I have always been an advocate for long pants, boots, and a helmet at the bare minimum. With the CE Armor and many shirts and jackets with armor available there is no reason not to. Your most likely injury at low speed is going to be road rash. It only makes sense to protect against it. CE Armor won't stop broken bones so rethink your needs. What it will do is energy absorption. Spreading an injury impact over a greater area is what helps to protect you. As well as absorbing some of the impact itself, there is a primary and secondary protection. Considering in many areas, cagers won't give you room and only see you as an interference to their "right" and have no thought of your "rights" to travel on the road as well, is reason enough to wear protective gear and forget sandals and a T-shirt. gloves are as much as an absolute must as helmets and shoes are. Anything that can come between your skin and the road enhances your reduction of injuries. If you are smart enough to invest in protective equipment, don't cheap out....Some cheap products can increase the likelihood of injury instead of reducing them.
BTW- I ride both a big bike and a scoot.
