I have my scooter where I want it now, however the next minor mod before I attempt a bbk:
I would like to install/mount a USB charger somewhere on my scooter.
Is there a barebones kit that I can attach to my battery or something?
It would be ok to be DC fired, aka only enabled when the engine is on.
I don't want to go as big as a 12v cigarette lighter adapter, just a minimal USB slot, maybe in the glove box, but I wouldn't be completely against it if you can convince me.
As usual, thanks in advance!

I've been wanting to do this for a long time too. I'm guessing you would need to buy a rectifier to convert from AC to DC voltage.
Do you know if I can just buy an upgraded 11 pole stator to replace the cheep ones in our taotao bikes?
I'm assuming from what I know of electronics we need better stator, rectifier, and better battery to be safe.

If you've got a battery and a lights, you must already have DC voltage somewhere that you can tap in to. USB is really only using 5 volts so it's not adding a lot of load to the system.

Yea, and I swapped all of my bulbs for low wattage LEDs, so I would assume that the draw is much lower too.
Do I just get a DC USB charger and cut the wires?

If you're going to hack an existing usb cable then make sure you get the pin-outs right.
On the motorcycle I hooked up a cigarette lighter outlet kit from Wally world in an out of the way place. Found a source of switched power (something non critical in case I caused trouble later, the clock light seemed like a good choice), and tapped in to it with one of those blue fold over crimp things. Attached the other lead to a nearby screw to get a good frame ground. Now I can plug in any car type charger for phone or cell or GPS. Or pop in one of those cheapo two slot, car to usb adapters and charge whatever usb device I have.

Or pop in one of those cheapo two slot, car to usb adapters and charge whatever usb device I have. Thanks for the details! I plan on mounting an old android phone, this should be a pretty simple install with your cigarette lighter hack. I've got several two year old smartphones just sitting around, any one of which can be a combined GPS (download offline Google maps on home wifi), MP3 player, and camera. I'll have to switch to an always hot power source rather than a keyed one in order to insure the smartphone stays charged, but since I ride a few times every day, there shouldn't be any worries about draining the scooter battery. Now the trick is to figure out how to mount the smartphone so that both the camera and the screen are usable. There's plenty of space in the fork panels for the cig lighter and usb adaptor, so that's not an issue.

www.rammount.com/There are enough options to cover anything you can dream up. Regardless of where you buy them, you'll pay a little more upfront as these are USA made. but you'll be way happier in the long run as these are awesome.

If it's an always on connection, why not get (if you have a battery tender), the adapter for a battery tender to cig ligter socket adapter? They are on amazon, pretty cheap.

I added 2 2x usb ports to my Burgman. I added one using a ram mount to the left brake reservoir and one in the storage bin under the seat. For some reason I can not add pictures. I will post my flikr account that I use for my website pictures. My USB port pictures are the last ones. www.flickr.com/photos/67825002@N04/sets/72157629458740790/Here is a video of the my bike when I re-did it this summer. Its about 8 minutes long. It may give you some ideas. Here is a link to my youtube video. I did it to show what mods I made to my Burgman.
