Have had 2 motorcycles now and just had a random good offer on my last bike. Since I'm off to college next month, I thought I might just go buy an inexpensive scooter to get around on. Right now I'm just in the research phase, deciding what I should be looking for, so I thought I'd join in here and get advice.

What size bike depends on where you will be riding. a 50 cc will work for short distance with slower speeds. 150 or so is what you may need for faster rides around town

Well, I already know I need at least a 150cc scooter. See I can get around town easy, the city bus is free for college students. However, all the good shopping is in the next town over, 8 miles down a 55mph road. And that is what I will mostly be using the scooter for. But a couple times a year (spring break, ect), I will want something I can ride the 400 miles home on, taking the 50 mph side roads, except when I go through the mountain pass, which means I need something that can go 60 mph over a mountain pass for about 45 minutes. Is this something I can expect from a scooter?

60 will be ur top speed on a 150
You may want to go with a 200 or greater

Inexpensive Chinese scooters aren't known to do well on long trips at or near their top speed. You should be looking at used Japanese or Italian machines. Kymco, Sym, and Genuine will get it done too... A 150 will barely do what you want...

Yeah, I know a 200cc or better scooter would work bes. The problem is, the only one's in that range I can afford around here is used Chinese models. My other options are new 150cc flyscooters with warrenties from a dealer, or used 150cc sym, stella, or other scooters off craigslist.

I have a 150 Chinese scooter, I love it, but couldn't imagine going 50+ on it for any prolonged length of time. I do when I need, maybe for a few miles, but that is it. The engine goes ok, but the ride is not as comfortable as I would like, especially riding for a long period of time. IMO You need something a little heavier, and more power, to be comfortable for that speed and distance.

I agree,,My 150 has many mods but I would not want to do over 50 for long,,40-45 mph all day long though...

You can be quite comfortable on a decent machine that size my 200 is no heavier (its lighter than some 150's) runs 10" wheels I do over 60 for roughly 20 miles daily. It's a blast. I am proficient at and have spent hours upon hour in a full racing tuck though. It does take a bit of getting used to... This cosprings.craigslist.org/mcy/3970837624.htmlwill do what you need and you can find them for less if you keep your eyes open. Also you often find decent modern 150's for the same money. A 150 will do what you need just not a Chinese 150... PS you only have to tuck in for 60+ it will do 50-55 all day with plenty of throttle left...
