I have been tried a "performance" cdi and it did not advance my timing any further than my stock one and it was fixed. I used a timing light and learned my stock cdi fired on the F mark of the fly wheel at idle and at 3000 it fired on the last line. The performance cdi only fired on the second mark which is an advance but no more than stock. So I came up with gluing a nut to the right of the pick up on the fly wheel. Now my timing is advanced well past the second line. I rode it up the road and it felt like it had a little more low end power. I am going to ride a little long to decide if it helps. But for free its worth a try. If anybody wants to do this make sure the nuts you use are magnetic and thinner than the pickup on the flywheel. Attachments:

Have to say not a good idea, with the heat the glue will melt and those nuts can fly behind the Flywheel and cause a lot of damage and also to the pickup coil.
If you want to change the timeing SLOT the holes holding the PICKUP COIL so you can move it left or right, or you can buy OFFESET WOODRUFF KEYS. Or you can buy a good ADVANCING CDI. Alleyoop

Wow,, Now that's pretty funny,,maybe a little tack weld to hold em there if you like it and don't want them to take a ride,,the flywheel is steel or no??

Your call, you can laugh now but it won't be so funny if they come flying off And yes flywheel is metal. Alleyoop

I will use something better to hold them but I just used that for testing I wanted to be able to get them off if it ran worst than before.

wait..do not laugh at the guy, he was trying something and it may or may not work, at least he is trying something and posting for all to see jeffery5568...I did the same thing but a different way..I slotted the hole in the pickup where it mounts to the cases..I slotted them as far as it would go and pushed it the whole way. seems to be fine. I do run + octane as I have no base gaskets on 50mm BBK

I slotted my pickup to but I wanted more timing. I want to take my base gasket out next how much did it raise your compression.

You want to advance it a lot MOVE the CHAIN on the CAM SPROCKET one tooth over. One chain link is approx 10% timing change. Alleyoop

I have thought of that but I was worried about smashing valves. Removing base gasket is next once I find an adapter for my compression gauge so I can see before and after.

Too much compression is NOT a good idea. You can do more HARM than GOOD ;D

Here is how timing work on a motor, advancing the timing FIRES the plug before it gets to the TOP!! So no smashing valves much less than RETARDING it which will fire the plug at TDC or NEAR TDC or even JUST PAST TDC. Just so you know having the plug firing JUST a hair past TDC when IT JUST ROLLS past the top just a hair to start moving down MAKES THE MOST POWER on a motor. BUT it is very hard on the CRANK and PISTON PIN. Alleyoop

If the actual combustion and expansion is to happen at the instant of greatest effect, don't you need to fire the spark before TDC so that the flame front has those precious microseconds to propagate before the magic moment?
