Hello Longterm, I guess the best way to explain it is to tell you of a co worker of mine... he rides a Honda Elite with 10 inch tires.. One day going to work, ( as I'm told ) he hit a raccoon, his tires did not roll over the raccoon and sent him over the handle bars as the bike flipped. This was three months ago, and he's still off work.. There are many hazards we face on the road. Bigger tires deal with these hazards better than smaller ones..

Ironic that Larry and I were just talking about this in the other thread...
With bigger tires also means lower rpms to reach the same speed... bigger surface area so less chance of slippage... and like Larry said, you can drive over bigger obstacles.

All it means is more of a chance for google users to find this useful information on their own Plus I need to raise my post count more; I stopped using this forum for a few months and now my post count reflects the lowly newbieness that I am, haha. Not that there's anything wrong with newbs...

What size tire do you need to run over a raccoon? Bigger wheels and tires can make a difference but who knows if the raccoon riding issue was the tire or improper raccoon jumping. I have been running 10" wheels now and don't know that there is a crazy difference at speed. I travel the same road as I did with 2 other scooters, one with 12's and one with 13's. All in all it is nearly the same. Theoretically a taller tire with more mass will be less likely to fall over at speed but this also means it is not as maneuverable as a smaller tire. I have ridden bikes with all sorts of different sizes and though they ride differently I think the real safety issue is not knowing how to deal with the performance of your particular tire/wheel size. I hit a Husky with my the scooter that had 12" wheels on it and didn't go down. Was it the wheels that saved me?? I don't think so...

I can't say i know all the details of this accident as he has not returned to work yet, only what ive been told what happened.. He's suppose to return soon and ill know more.. But personally I like the bigger tires.. especially on the front...

I hit a possum going 50 MPH on my Echarm . Luckily I just clipped it rather than head on .
The 10s are not stable at top speed . I love my Magnum with fat doughnuts 130/60/13s as it handles and rides so much better and I feel safer on it . Strong wind and uneven road patches and cracks would get sketchy with 10s and 16s but never once with the wider 13s

Well Raccoon jumping aside, I'm reserving judgement until I see him.. Kent is an experienced rider, been riding for many years. And my first though when I heard of it was, "Why didn't he roll over it ? " But apparently he didn't and landed in the hospital.. My only thought as to why he didn't roll over the raccoon is that he couldn't with 10 Inch tires, I was not there so much of this is speculation I admit..
I road 10 inch tires for a long while with Fawkes, and I know how unforgiving they can be with pot holes, and other minor road obstructions.. Kent really is a good guy, and I'm waiting for his return... Also he's of the best parts crib attendant we have...
