Bwader basically got my thoughts on what I wrote. Doesn't really matter if one is a v-twin and the other is a P-twin, they're both twins, twins have lower MPG, and higher HP/torque usually.
That being said, the TU250x has enough HP to go on the interstate, and definitely on the highway, so it's good enough. Though I'm not willing to pay $2-3k more for a bike that can do exactly the same, only at ~10MPH lower.

Yeah if I was going for more horsepower a 2 cylinder engine bike would be the way to go.
I like 1 cylinder to worry about and a little better gas mileage.
Just going off the theory of 2 cylinders in an engine VS 1 cylinder.
The more cylinders = more parts , more power, more fuel burned or less mpgs, better looking.
VS single cylinder = less parts, better mileage, less power, simple
2 cylinders is cool looking though I'd choose a single cylinder bike.

Most chinese bikes are single cylinder bikes, and can be tuned to have great gas mileage. My bike has a choke. I can manually adjust it to run at peak performance (by slightly opening it, I can adjust the AF ratio). I can also run leaner than optimal, though I prefer to get all available power to my wheels. To have a choke, is wonderful!

I love the sym, but at $3k it's not really worth it; Besides all that chrome is actually steel, and going to rust in a few weeks! I like that it's a manual geared 150! Great on gas, has a rear sprocket that you can change (because like usual, these bikes are always tuned too low in gears), and it's got a tach, something my bike doesn't have. But I don't think it's worth the 3k price! For that reason I bought this one: www.superiorpowersports.com/127cc_motorcycle_p/rk127mc-05.htmAt just over $1k shipping incl. it's a steal! I atually bought it a bit cheaper than what it is online right now! It has it's problems, but nothing you can't work around! Stock, it's a great replacement for a 50cc scooter; but it's not going much faster than a tuned 50cc 4 stroke. With a sprocket change, I will be able to get more out of it!

Wow, you sure know a lot about something you never owned! I did own one, and it was worth $3000. No rust ever, mpg and 70 mph top speed. It never broke, and ran like a champion from the beginning without replacing or fixing anything. It had a very nice suspension and handled really well. A fun, reliable and economical machine that will keep running for a long time...

A single cylinder engine can have as much hp as the same displacement twin cylinder engine it is just that twin will generally run smoother. They call singles thumpers for a reason. My single cylinder 250 has about the same hp as the Suzuki Twin however the Aprilia 250 single is a high compression engine.

gitsum: Nice it works out for you. You're in the desert. I'm in hot and humid S florida, and even my Honda VT-750 starts corroding (and that's a real honda, not a korean or chinese model). I guess the humidity over there is just too low to start corroding. The one I have now, is 125cc, top speed of 60-65MPH (depending on the wind), and 100+MPG.

My Chinese 250 is still running good after 5 years of owning. Can do 70 mph into Jefferson City MO on 54 Expressway from Fulton. I don't see any point in buying a higher quality scooter, when this one does everything I need it too. Runs great.. It has 6700 miles on it. It really depends on several factors to why I would choose a Jap bike over a Chinese bike. If you plan on long commutes daily, well the Jap bike is better, but if you plan on 15 miles rides and every year a 250 mile ride- well a Chinese scooter might get you by. Attachments:

The Chinese are going to do to the Japanese what the Japanese did to the British and American motorcycle/motor scooter manufacturers. That is in effect put them out of business. They have the resources, manpower, and technical ability to accomplish this goal. The QC will come in time. YOU CAN'T STOP THE DRAGON.
