My 50 has been developing a nasty vibration at around 5k RPM, 25-28mph. Anywhere else, no vibration. In my year spent as a golf cart mechanic(CVT driven), this vibration was usually the result of a gouge in the variator pulley causing the belt to shake @ one particular spot on the pulley. I just checked, I don't have that problem. This also happens to be right in the spot that my bike slows to on the hills that I ride daily(backroad mountains), thus my thinking that bogging it down constantly in that 1 range was cutting a groove in the pulley. Nope.
Any ideas? It's getting worse, to the point of making some weird grinding/flapping noise.

It sounds like the flywheel at least like mine sounded when it started looseing up and when it got a little worse it sounded like a rod knocking

I should add the sound is more like a baseball card in my spokes, obviously its not but its a thin, flapping sound.

Try lighter weights in slider form instead of rollers . Unbalanced tires will bounce and shimmy

Change the belt. If you are running the cheap flavor ebay belts like I do they each behave different. 1 $4 belt had massive vibration right out of the box. The next $4 belt ran smooth with a small vibration at 3/4 range. The $12 belt ran smooth and strong to 300 miles and developed a small harmonic at 3/4 shift range, acceptable. The $40 gates runs smooth with no noticeable harmonics with 4000 miles on it. It's the rubber Man!
That is taking in consideration that the variator and rear pulley bushing are in limits.

Belts in good shape all the way around, holding up well for the stock one. Barely any powder in the case after 1600 miles. I did find that 3 of my weights have some flat spots, I sprayed some silicone lubricant on them and the vibration went away, so looks like I'm going to need some new ones. I also found the source of the noise, loose exhaust bolts caused by the vibration I assume.
I'm left wondering what weight I should get. My stock rollers were 7g, and aside from lousy hill performance, it's right where I want it to be. I was planning on going with a BBK to help with hills and leaving everything else as is, as that would be just about perfect I feel for what I want from the scoot.

I wouldn't spray anything on the variator or anything. The transmission should remain dry.
Making things wet causes all those particles to stick to it, and that will make things worse.

If anything, water won't harm, to get it cleaned.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It was a legitimate diagnostic test that worked, using a compound created for just that sort of thing. I'm also an ASE master auto tech, been using this stuff for 15 years. Its non flammable and dried with the heat created from a prolonged test ride, hence why the vibration returned at the end.

You might want to try 5 or 6 grams. Would help a little on the hills and probably not affect your top end any. I weight 220 and my stock weights were 6 grams. I replaced them with 4 grams and upped my hill speed about 5 mph. my top speed also went up a little. The reason I replaced mine was at my weight the engine would only rev up to about 6000 rpm. now it revs to around 7200 rpm. More into the powerband.

Graphite powder sometimes helps after you put in a new matched set of rollers/sliders. The ramps could be slightly deformed or rough causing the uneven wear or the bushing could have too much play in it so you may be needing to replace the variator. Parts For Scooters has the Hoca which ran very smooth in my old 150.
Belt/CVT vibration if it has been bad enough to loosen your muffler may have already damaged your gear case bearings and seals which will have you clutch wobbling now. It might be time to replace the bearings and seal on the clutch shaft in the gearcase before you loose the clutch and have other collateral damages.
