49cc gy6
bought it in rough shape, PO had done some really dumb stuf to it
he disconnected the exhaust and road it around like that, he upgraded the carb and said it ran better, he only road it 10 times and said it took at least an hour to start every time, then he let it sit for a year
i couldnt get it started, the kick start is really rough and wont return
i ordered a new battery and charged it up and installed it
the electric start churned very well, but no ignition
i checked the spark plug and got good spark
i sprayed some carb and choke cleaner in the carb and tryd to start, the thing wanted to start soooo bad and even acted like it would but died after like a second
i repeated the process several times with the same response
so i put the stock carb on and checked for any kind of squirt when i jigled the throttle, barly any so i cranked it hard like 20 times and then tryed to start
it started! and ran for like 11 seconds and died no matter how hard i rev'd it
i figured it might be the vacume lines, so i eliminated them completely by going from the fuel filter strait to the carb and it ran!! for like 20 seconds and i could ride it to the end of the drive way (it ran like crap and was sooo slow) and it would die.
at this point i was just thinking it was lots of crap in the lines and stuff from sitting, so i replaced all the gas and just kept riding it for 20 seconds at a time
i found some screws that would fit the exhuast and reattached it
i started it and road it up the road and whenever it would start to die i would put my feet down and run as hard as i could and that would revive it.
but any time i try to turn it around it would die...
any low rpms and it wants to die...
what could be the problem?

couple of things come to mind... I'd start by tearing the carb down and cleaning it, make sure the jets and all the passages are nice and clear then set the a/f mixture. Make sure the enricher is working correctly and then take a good long look at the intake manifold for cracks and holes, they are very cheap (10.00 bucks) I'd have half a mind to just replace the intake manifold so you know you don't have a vacuume leak there. There is also an intake manifold isolater gasket that gives problems, change that as well (like 3.00 bucks). That's where I'd start. While you are at it, replace all the fuel lines, fuel filter and make sure what comes out of that line is nice and clean. Scoots don't like dirty or old fuel. If it still runs poorly, do all the vacuum lines as well. Between fuel lines and vacuum lines, it's like 10 bucks of tubing from an autoparts store. The spray type carb cleaner can be had for like 4 bucks a can (get 2)... IF you don't feel confident with tearing apart the carb to clean it, a repalcement should be around 40 bucks, but honestly, cleaning these carbs are very easy. Just lay out a nice white piece of paper or I use one of those aluminum turkey roating pans you get a supermarket as a work space as it will help you see all the little parts.

good call, do you think it could be the valves seeing as the PO used to ride it around with the exhuast just dangling

Yes, adjust both valves to .003 inchs, that at least will help with loosing compression that makes them very hard to start and die at low rpms and will not hold an idle.
Once you get the carb all cleaned out and put back, also make sure you clean the Air Filter and attach it to the carb. Then turn the Fuel Ratio Mixture Clockwise until it stops DO NOT FORCE it just until it stops. Then turn it COUNTER CLOCKWISE 2 1/2 turns and try to start it.
If it starts and stays started LET IT WARM UP FOR A LEAST 5 MINUTES IDLING. Then adjust the FUEL RATIO SCREW to GET the HIGHEST IDLE while on the center stand.
Now you can try it and see if it runs better riding it. If it runs good but slow then you will have to CHECK out the Variator weights and belt and or rollers may be worn. Alleyoop

awesome! thank you for the input! is there an issue with going strait from the tank to the filter to the carb, without and of those vacuum things, my step dad is going to machine me a fitting to step down the tubing

No not a problem just use a SHUT OFF VALVE you do not want gas to be able to flow after you shut it off. Overnight especially in the hot summer overnight it can flood your carb and you will find gas all over the floor. But you do not need to have something built just go to the hardware store and get a GAS COUPLER the size you need and a step down for your 1/4 inch gas hose like this: Alleyoop

YEah yeah, I should of told him-- Valve adjustment..... I saw, it had been sitting.... I think sitting is the number one enemy on these scooters....

Urbanmadness, I always say MORE HEADS ARE BETTER THAN one, one can forget something or gets something wrong and the other head corrects and or adds or both We all learn something just about everyday and if we are lucky we can pass what we learn onto others. Alleyoop

I'd check the compression too while your in there if at all possible. Running without an exhaust system can cause serious issues... Carb clean and valves for sure. Hope it all works out

sounds like a blown exaust valve, cause of no exuast. I was just curious and tried to start the scoot without an exaust. won't start not unless you give it gas. when I did get it started wouldn't stay running. stock heads are .002 any mods like A9 cam higher head assy. ect....... .003-.005
if what these guys are saying don't work I'd suggest replacing the vv's. If you're not confindent on messing with internal parts then replace the whole head.
note: As you are going through the carb take note of what size your jets are. My stock carb is an 18mm with 78mj 33ij, these jets came with the carb. I set my a/f screw 1 1/4 out.
when runing ride safe.

This happened to a buddy who rode around without a muffler for 2 months them boom is that cold air getting into the cil from busted seal/burnt valve, hot cold hot cold. Or, did it get too hot, melting. Maybe dirt entering the cil from the exhaust port while riding? just want to clarify great pic btw.
