that looks like a cold air getting into the hot cylinder type of damage to me, the way the metal looks all wrinkly and wavy

Yep the pipe helps to transfer heat away from the engine no pipe equals too hot

That picture looks more like the motor floated or dropped a valve.... was it over-revved?
Looks like the piston and valve had a disagreement about who could occupy the same space, at the same time.
