I'm going to try this out at 3,000 miles. Wanted to hear what your experiences were.

I work at a garage for a living and 0w20 goes in all the new Toyota's and Honda hybrids, both of which I would imagine have much more precise tolerances then my Chinese scoot,I would absolutely not put that in mine, way to thin.

Oil passages and clearances vary in engine types . For example newer cars use the thin oil but older ( maybe new as well unsure ) BMWs and Mercedes use 20w50 since the passages are bigger . I would only use a brand name 10w40 dino at first and synthetic once broken in . I used Shell Rotella 15w40 since it tough enough for Diesels and my manual said 15w40 was suggested but weird it uses the same in the gears as most others use GL5 which is 80w90 .
Too thin is no good just as too thick like straight 50 will not circulate as good and be harder on the pump .
Stick with any premium 10w40 engine oil used for cars and change at 1,000 miles or when it starts to go from golden to getting blackened . If all the way black it should have been changed before hand . Make sure to clean out the oil screen too . Most use 750mls or close to 3/4 a quart . GY6 types you remove the dipstick , wipe it clean and push it in but do not screw it in . My Echarm however the dipstick should be screwed in according to my dealer during the PDI
I have seen a few ruin their scooter and car by not changing the oil as suggested or letting it get low which is very bad . Oil is 5 bucks and up where an engine can be several hundred so its a easy decision on what to do
When I was young I had a Geo Metro which called for 10w30 , with having over 100,000 miles I tried 20w50 in the summer and it seemed to have less pep and not run as good . I changed it to 10w40 since of the miles and it was in the summer and it was a noticeable improvement .
I use Castrol Synblend 10w40 these days and Mobil1 10w40 in the Echarm gears and Mobil 1 80w90 in my 2Ts gears

Your oil will be black before even reaching 1000km's
I'd suggest 10W30 the lowest. 10W40, or I even mix 10W30 with 15W40, to get 12,5W35; which IMHO is a very good mixture!
Perhaps in the future I'll add 75% 10W30, and 25% 15W40 in it, to get a 11,5W32,5 mixture; as 12,5W35 is very smooth, but maybe I'll get better gas mileage with less of the heavy 15W40 in it.

The few cents you will save in gas will be far outweighed by the money you will spend when your engine throws the rod. Or seizes up. Just go with a synthetic to help with gas mileage is your best bet.

I'm going to try this out at 3,000 miles. Wanted to hear what your experiences were. The oil pump does not have the capacity to keep the bearings floating on a GY6 with 0w20 oil in it. It is an antique engine design which requires a heavier weight oil that a modern modular design water cooled automotive engine.

Actually, I think it will work, however not good. Many metal flakes in the oil, and the spacing / tolerances are too wide, so you're going to get a lot of exhaust gasses flowing back in the oil through the creeps.
It will work, though not recommended. You'll probably feel the cylinder/engine vibrating more as the metal against metal scraping is more.

I use Castrol 20/50 fossil in our Long Hot summers here in north central FL. and 10/40 in our winters that can be as cold as the great lake states here. "BUT" Being as it is there is no oil filter to speak of in a Linhia 257cc I change it every 1200-1500 miles. Its never dirty and always has good viscosity. These are the only important points to the lubrication system besides temp.
