Who here, recalls doing drills in grade school for a nuclear bomb. Sort of funny, but we use to fall to the floor and crawl under the desk, covering our heads. This was back in the late 1960's when Russia was known as the Soviet Unoin. Sort of scary to think about...

Yup I did that in elementary school.
Makes no difference if it protected you or not. In fact if you were not in the immediate area it would have offered some shelter fromflying glass from windows exploding. Schools back then had the glass with chicken wire embedded in it too so the glass would have at least been smaller chunks I guess.

Oh YEAH!
The grainy 8mm film animated turtle singing to us kids... "Duck n' COVER". Even as a little nipper I had to chuckle at the idea of my plywood school desk protecting me from a 400 megaton Soviet missile... LOLOLOL! THOSE were some DANGEROUS times.
In a documentary last year, it was reported that during the 1960's Cuban missile crisis showdown, we came down to SECONDS (not minutes) but seconds from "pushing the button". At the last possible moment, Premier Kruschev "blinked". NO real protective measures back then... No anti-missile missiles, no "Star Wars" intercept system. Just thin air between us, Russia and all our ICBM's. And BOTH of us had enough horsepower to vaporize the entire world.
This idiotic North Korean "sabre-rattling" reminds me of those days when nobody knew better. You'd think mankind would have grown up some since then, but NOPE! Think I'll dig out my school desk from the shed and see if I still fit under it... HeHeHe...
I miss the old days... Ozzie and Harriet are gone. Ward and June Cleaver are no longer with us, and Wally and the Beaver are geriatric old geezers like myself. Even Annette is now singing the Mickey Mouse Club song with the angels... Back "in the day" we had common-sense TV role-models who actually provided some GOOD life-lessons for kids. Dad made $100 a week with no overtime, Mom stayed home and kept the kids out of the streets, and that $100 a week paid for a decent house, car, and left some extra for a rainy day. The company CEO made $20K a year, the janitor made $12K. The CEO had a $15K house and drove a Cadillac. The janitor had a $10K house and drove a Ford.
Yup... Dad's job paid the bills and Mom's wisdom kept the kids straight. Dad wore a suit and tie to the dinner table. Mom wore a fresh dress. And your school desk kept you safe from World War III. All was in order, and life was good. At least we thought so...
Hang in there! The OldChopperGuy's thought for the day: "Remember, just ONE nuclear missile can ruin your whole day..."
Leo (ready to duck n' cover) in Texas
PS: Hey Doug, those old schools had that chicken-wire glass (and jailhouse paint) because the schools back then were designed and built by the same guys who built the big state and federal prisons... HeHeHe... REALLY!

Leo, your comments are almost exactly what my friend said this eve, about what he thinks is wrong with our world. He said mom used to stay home and raise the kids while dad earned a living for the family. Now, both parents earn money for spending while the kids are raised by the babysitter/daycare/school. And nobody's teaching them morals like mom did us. Dunno if he's right, but it does make sense. Not that I'm for "pregnant in the kitchen in a fresh dress" but at least one parent needs to really be a parent instead of just a second money earner for buying more stuff. I've encountered too many customers in stores who care so little about their kids they have zero clue where the kids are let alone what they're doing. I wish I had been Grandmother's sister instead of her grand-daughter. >'Kat

Ya, that was crazy, because if the Russians had attacked, well everything would have been gone anyhow.... About the last comment, ya parents both work today. Don't spend quality time with their families. I was born in 1964.. My parents divorced before I was 3.. My father remarried and divorced my step mother before I was 12. After that my father met a lady only 18 years old and spent all his time with her. So it occured back in the 1960's too, where parents did not care to be with their children. I however moved into my Grandparents home and was raised by them. A much more stable enviroment..lol My Grandfather was born in 1911 and Grandmother 1916...

I remember the duck and cover drills as a child. I dont think that it would make any difference in an actual nuclear attack though. I only pray that common sense prevails.
