The past week my scooter won't stay running in the cold when I first start it in the cold, here it's in the thirties,it will start just fine and idle around 1500 rpm for about 30 secs then drop really low and die,the only way I can keep it running is hold the throttle at 1500-1700 for about two minutes then it will stay running on its own fine.what gives? 150cc 1000 miles so far

Cold air makes the engine run leaner. Adjust the fuel mixture to richen it up.

I thought about that but wouldn't it do it all winter,I rode most of the cold season? It just started,I did a little more research maybe the auto choke, like its opening but just not long enough duration, can that happen or is it either working or not?

First of all in the cold like that when you first start them the ENRICHER feeding it more fuel it should idle close to 2000 or so RPMS then as the motor warms up the idle should drop 400-500 rpms. Your 150 you should set the IDLE AFTER IT IS HOT to idle at 1500-1700 where it idles the smoothest. Lower than 1500 rpms is to low the butterfly is not open enough. That is why you have to hold the throttle. Alleyoop

When it happened to me I usually just adjusted the idle screw and that worked for me.

I had the exact same problem on my 50cc, a valve lash adjustment cured it. It also didn't run very well cold before adjusting the valves.

How long should the idle be higher on a cold start? In the mornings It starts up and idles high for about 20 seconds then kicks down...normal?
