Alright I give Up....HELP....There, I asked for it:
Recently I swapped my stock Air Box for a regular cone-like air filter as the air box was getting a couple of cracks in it. I had to block off the hose coming off the CVT (it's a breather) and the other hose coming from the front of the head (fuel blow by that gets recycled back into the air box) as without the air box there was no where to attached them.
No Problems starting her up and riding around the parking lot and the next day I rode 4 miles to Post Office, then started her up with no problems and rode 3 miles to store, then started her up and rode 4 miles to bank. Would not start again...turns over and aaaallllmost gets going but will not actually start. I paid 40 bucks to get her towed home....ouch
Now I have worked on several scooters over the past 4 decades, so I've got some experience and on this one, when needed for the last 4 years, but I have never ran into something this frustrating...the engine turns over and almost gets to the point where it will almost stay running without holding the starter on and even backfires out of the carburetor but will not run... heres what I have tried :
1-pulled new air filter off and went back to air box - no help
Okay even knowing that she was turning over and almost starting I still did the following things just to be through:
2-checked for spark-good
3-replaced plug with new one-no help
4-replaced coil and CDI with new ones-no help
5-checked all fuel lines and vacuum lines for leaks - took every last one of them off and blew threw them to insure flow-gas breath bad and almost burnt my mustache off when I lite a cigarette -no help
6-replaced fuel filter with new one- no help
7-removed carburetor and cleaned bowl/jets/float/enricher slide & needle-no help
8-removed both the Main Diaphragm (on top of carb) and small Vacuum diaphragm (on side) and found no damage-cleaned & replaced-no help
9-Checked Intake manifold for cracks-none found
10-removed enricher and plugged in 12 volts and watched unit get warm and needle extend-no help
11-smacked my head on the ground 5 times out of frustration-no help
12 removed petcock to carb hose and intake to petcock hose and sucked (creating a vacuum) fuel sprayed out of other end and all over my crotch...balls on fire-proving petcock is working (and properly named unit)-but no help starting scooter
13-plugged everything back in that was stock-no help
14- gave up, got drunk-no help
I have been reading and watching every tutorial and video I can find to search for a solution-no help
NOTE: compression check reads 165 on electric start and 170 after 4 times with kick-starter
Should I just bite the bullet and buy a whole new system ? (carb/petcock/intake manifold/fuel & vacuum lines) to eliminate the last few parts I have not already bought new ? and count on them being Okay even after cleaning ?
My scooter had been running just fine before I switched out the air box to a filter and even ran good after the switch..but for only the 3 trips. Like I said, I only switched it out because the tape I had put on the air box 2 years ago (to cover/patch a couple of cracks in the rubber nozzle that goes up to the air box) was coming loose...and a new filter was only $10...now, in retrospect I wished I had just retaped the dam thing.
Could the electric fuel Enricher not be working properly even though with power it extended ? could the petcock only be working partially ?
Any and all thoughts and suggestions are welcome.
