Paladin, how long have you been riding full time? First time, November '64, in Detroit, just for the winter, sold for a '61 Austin Healey Sprite, which I crashed.... Had a '74 DT175 that I rode mostly the time, thru '86 when I married. Had to have passenger capability, sold the bikes. Kids older, we needed a replacement for a killed car, wife was looking at the newspaper ads and said "Have you considered a motorcycle?" Being a "responsible" family man I took the class and get a motorcycle license before riding. October 14, 2004 (Blog is handy notes on what I got when.) Did not realize how much I missed riding. Technically, I am full time since then, but I can use one of her cages if I need to carry bigger stuff. It was about 8 years ago that I realized that I am a full time rider, part time cager -- that I do not *like* being in a cage. I started riding in '49, a toddler, I think the neighbor girls thought I was cute. I remember on the pedals, seat behind my head, hands higher. I remember riding in the car, window open, head outside, face in the wind. Last Sunday was nice, riding in the Mojave, no traffic, no helmet, no jacket, no gloves, just putting along at 30-40 mph. Scooters are good, but there are a few things you cannot do. Your old Subaru is about perfect -- any road, any time, can carry a lot of stuff and in if need more you can rent a trailer. Wife bought her dad's Sportage, added a class-II trailer hitch. When it dies we will be looking for something similar. Maybe a small truck, but there are no any small trucks available.

Don't do cage any more, but the last two were bought new: A 1972 Ford Pinto. Front bumper bolts were swapped for four Lucas Square Eight lamps, and co-phased CB antennas backed up with a 100 watt linear. The Pinto was sold for a 1977 GMC K2500, 400sb, auto, full time 4x4 NP206, on one ton suspension. Then, at age 39, I went and got married. Now I have a Vespa, and she has four cages.

if i knew it was going to be that tough to change a tire i would have paid someone to do it.... On my Savage I managed to change the rear tire, front I worked on it for a couple of days and gave it to a local shop. Who did not mount the tire at the valve to the balance dot. I learned. I bought spare front/rear wheels. Then I can figure out an easy way.

It has been six years since I was howling at the full moon in the Mojave -- www.dslretorts.com/Paladin/archives/002372.html It is about time, eh? Then I was riding a 650 Savage: Moon, using flash. On the road with the rocks was moonlight, but I had to enhance it. I now have the Vespa, and a better camera. Should be able to get better pictures. If anyone want to tag along, I will be fueling at the T/A truck stop in Indio. 22 miles east to the park, they close the door at midnight so you can sneak in without paying, 63 miles thru the park to Joshua Tree. If they are closed, the Pilot truck stop will be open at the Interstate, just 28 mile further. That's the plan.

As far as I know, the race tires will be far sticky with more traction, but will wear out in about 500 miles.

I had a '61 Sprite in '65. I had a '67 Spitfire in '70. Realized that I am a biker, don't partially care about any cage. There is exactly one cage that I would accept: www.uscaterham.com/showroom/roadsport.html1200 pounds.
