Personally, I think its one of the most selfish things a person can do.... Hot Flash! You are going to die. Really! All you can do is enjoy life while you can. The most selfish thing a person can do is force people to continue living. When in 1992 California they passed the mandatory helmet law, and 40% of motorcyclists quit riding -- it was not worth riding if they cannot feel the breeze, feel and breathe the cool fresh air. You may enjoy riding with a four pound helmet, I do not. I am currently NOT enjoying riding, but it is better than being locked up in a cage. Life is enjoyable when I cross the State line and can get rid of the damn helmet.

www.searcylaw.com/do-you-know/dyk-head-injury/•Millions of people suffer head injuries each year .... Note: They do not even mention motorcycles. Very few people wear helmets when driving their car. In 1952 I was walking across a street when a car hit me and threw me 100 feet landing on my head. I was not wearing a helmet while I was walking. In 1965 I had a collision, injuries in the jaw and top of my head -- jaw hit the steering wheel, head pivoted for the top of the head into the windscreen. I was in an Austin Sprite, *not* wearing a full face helmet. I still do not drive without wearing a helmet, even though race drivers *always* wear helmets. Do *YOU* wear a helmet when you drive? Or do you prefer the comfort of no helmet while driving? What is the difference with the comfort of riding a motorcycle?

... I will always get on the ATGATT soapbox and preach protection. I hate the thought of anyone not riding stupid getting hurt when it very well might've been prevented.... I hate the thought of anyone riding stupid and getting hurt because they felt they were protected. Knowing that you are not protected helps stopping you from riding stupid. But it is not as much fun. The thread is Subject: Am now always tempted to ride without helmet. Riding sans helmet, for some people, is far more comfortable than wearing a couple of pounds on your head.

... If you end up a veg then its your family and friends who suffer.... I am 67, I have an ER of 25%, I have heart disease, I had a stroke. IF I have an accident that a helmet would have saved my head, my body will be mangled and I will be dead anyhow. I am NOT worried about having an accident on the scooter. Statistically www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s0121.pdf I have a 36% chance of death by malignant neoplasms 30% chance of death by cerebrovascular diseases 7.4% chance of death by chronic lower respiratory diseases 1.4% chance of death by pneumonia 0.76% chance of death by motor vehicle accidents 0.67% chance of death by falls 0.63% chance of death by suicide. Riding the scooter decreases my death by heart attack or stroke far less than the chance of having a vehicle collision. Less if I have to wear a helmet.

I ride a helmet only because of the law. For being legal, I have a 24 ounce Daytona half helmet, the smallest and lightest I could find. I am uncomfortable on a helmet, because the weight slightly slows my head, which means I look around just a bit less, and I have a greater risk of being into a collision.
Wearing a helmet means you don't have to worry about dropping your head on the ground. Without a helmet you are not allowed to fall, and is less fun. Those who wear helmets tell me I will crash, they have. I don't wear a helmet and I haven't crashed. They say "not yet." After 49 years I and tired of waiting for the crash.
Whatever! Ride Your Own Ride. If you want to ride naked, do so. Don't ask others to ride like you ride. Ignore those who demand they you must ride the same as they ride.

It was enlist in the Air Force for four years, or allowed to be drafted into the Army for two years with a guarantee of a visit to Viet Nam. The Air Force sent me to school for nine months, two and a half years to Athens, Greece (and six months in Georgia but ignore that). After that the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph hired me as a top technician and paid me for having fun.
I thank you for an fabulous 45-year career.

An issue: anyone tall will NOT be comfortable on a Savage! My mother has one, it fits her perfectly. She's 4'11" tall. I can barely ride it...it's worse than the little 250 Nighthawk I rode for training.... My 6'2" (36" inseam) wife sitting on my Savage. First Mount: Second Mount: Savage fitted my 5'9" 30" inseam just fine.

He took a 150cc on the freeway? (was he new to scootering?) I am "new" to scooters since a year ago, but I have been riding for nearly a half century. I take my 150.5cc Vespa on the freeways and Interstates, but I know how to drive slow vehicles. Going from L.A. to Sequoia Nat. Mon. and back I got 70+ mpg doing 60 mph.

The Savage is the Big Single, 652cc and weighs only 50 pounds more than the 250's. If you don't like cruisers, you can make it into a Café: (and reduce the weight to about 330 pounds.)

If you are considering a motorcycle, a Thumper, look for a Suzuki Savage / S40 -- first sold in 1986 and is still available. A hair lighter than the Blast, a lot smoother, faster off the line, and the Savage Forum is very helpful.
