In those days it was called a Salsberry (sp?) transmission. Today we call them CVTs.

It was a far cry from the modern scooters. 40 MPH max, Certified under 5 HP. I rode it from NW Arkansas to eastern Kentucky and back. About 40 miles from home when it seized.

I thought some of you might be interested in this picture. In 1961 I bought this 1960 Harley Davidson Topper. New for $363. 165 cc two stroke. The engine seized at 2500 miles repaired under warranty, and by 5000 it was getting noisy so traded it off. Attachments:

It took me 20 months and 10,600 miles to get my fill of Chinese. Got a used Honda Reflex. Lots of difference. Smoother ride and Honda reliability.

In my opinion, bigger is better. Physically larger is easier for other drivers to see. Bigger engine safer and lasts longer in the same type of service.

Doug, I particularly liked the one on the Jonway. For a brisk take off it would go to 4000 RPM and hold that until about 50 MPH and then climb from there. Since I normally cruise 50-60 it seldom ever went over 5000. Exception: when I had to get on freeways and needed to keep up. This Honda goes to near 6000 then drops back some but only back to 5000 at 40. Haven't had a chance at open road yet to see what it does at higher speeds. May be up in your "neck of the woods" in a week or two.

What is the weight of the rollers in a standard Chinese 250 variator? This Honda turns many more rpms for the same speed and I do a lot of long distance cruising. Does the entire variator for a 250B/YY250t fit a Reflex
What is the weight of the rollers in a standard Chinese 250 variate?

The 250 Jonway I just disposed of showed 4000 RPM at 50 mph. This Honda Reflex I just got shows 5000 at 40. The Jonway speedometer was fairly accurate--3 mph high at all speeds. Any 250 riders with comparisons to share?
