I have another troublesome scoot. It is a 50cc 4 stroke, gy6 I believe. With a lot of cranking and some throttle manipulation I can get it to run and it sounds pretty solid, but it wont idle. I don't hear any noises. The first time I tried to turn it over, the crank was solid, thought it was seized. Found out it was badly hydrolocked. First time I had seen a scoot with a crankcase full of gas. I drained it all out, pulled the plug and kicked her over until it was clean. Popped a new plug in, fresh gas, fresh oil, adjusted valves, new carb. Compression is over 100. If I have it running and let go of the throttle she dies right out. Takes a while to get started again, and then will die if I let of the throttle. Any ideas? Would the gas in the oil caused any bottom end issues that I am not seeing?

I figured you experts may be able to direct me to the issue faster than I can locate it. I have spark when I pull the kill wire from the cdi, but not when I plug it back in. What is the next place to look for the issue, key switch or kill switch. Assuming it is one of those 2. 50cc scoot.

I got it started, finally. Don't think that the problem is resolved though. I will have to let it cool down and check again. One thing I noticed that I am wondering if it matters, is that when the engine is idling there is only 12.5 volts at the battery, shut off it is the same, even revving it up I think I saw 12.6V once. So I am thinking there is a no charge situation. (1) what would that be, voltage regulator? (2) would that have anything to do with the hard starting?

Tried that too, had a "short" deep well socket that wouldn't fit either.

JL50QT-15 is what is on the model identification tag. It says ZScooter on the body panel. Is that the info you were looking for?

I now have a scoot with a 139qmb engine in that does not want to start. I have flushed out the fuel tank, verified flow through the fuel lines out of the tank, through the filter, and the fuel is pumping from the vacuum operated fuel pump/ petcock. Brand new carb with electric choke, adjusted valves to .oo4I/.005E, cranked engine and re-verified clearances. Pulled spark plug cap and checked for spark at new plug, I can not get the old plug out because the frame runs right in front of the plug and I can not get a socket in there. I had it running yesterday after much cranking and it ran great once it was running. Compression is good as well. Haven't been able to get the plug out to do a proper check, but using the kickstart by hand I can hardly get it past compression stroke. Plugging the throat of the carb with my hand also isn't helping. Brand new battery as well. Oil is at an appropriate level. Anything I may be missing?

Hi guys, this is actually for an atv, but I figured much of the same logic applies.
I put a fresh battery in this atv and the starter solenoid kicked in and the starter cranked, key was off. I then disconnected the solenoid wire from the ignition so it is dangling and it still kicked over. So I unplugged the solenoid at its connector and it finally stopped cranking, but all the lights are on, even with the key off and the switches off. I don't see any mouse chews anywhere. Has anyone run across this before?

thanks for the suggestions guys. I ended up breaking as much of the plastic off of the cap, beating a straight slot screw driver into the barrel and turning the cylinder while holding the cap with a pipe wrench until the lock broke. Worked like a charm!

Hi guys, I was wondering if there is any way to get the locked gas cap off a scooter I am working on, without taking it to a locksmith. I have the ignition out and the seat lock, but don't know if there is a way to get the gas cap off. Any suggestions?

Hoping to resurrect this a bit. If you watch the video, the rpms increasing is by my doing. What confuses me is the loud growling noise at the end of the vid. That is what is does if held at a higher consistent rpm. I just put a new carb on and it is doing the same thing. It will still start right up again and run until the engine runs out like the end of the vid...

Not entirely sure how to upload an image to the site, do I need to first host it on another site and link to it? My carb looks just like the one in the link you posted.
Air box is on correct, spark plug is about black, which I know is way rich, so maybe there is an issue there, but yet it idles fine and runs fine until it dies. I guess loud would be the wrong term, but the tone of the engine changes to a low growl.
It does sound like the carb is starving for fuel. I put a new rubber intake boot and gasket on. The oil pump failed, which is why it burned down on the first place, so I disconnected it and plugged the oil injection port and am premixing the fuel. I connected the vacuum petcock to my mighty vac to keep constant vacuum on the petcock and I can see fuel in the filter. Guess in the meantime I will pull the carb and check it out, maybe the needle is sticking.

No, rpms remain constant and it just starts to bog down. About the only thing I haven't checked is the crank seals.

Well, I tried to do as you suggested and came out with the same results. I turned it in to about 1/8 out from seated. Engine still runs for a few minutes, gets loud (sounds like it is stuggling) then slowly comes to a stop, then will start right up again. There is plenty of smoke, so I am assuming it is getting enough lube.
