You'll be lucky to get 5 miles out of a cheap belt. I had two of those fail in just a few miles. Pay for a Gates or Bando and you'll be glad you did. I got 300 miles out of a cheap Kevlar belt , lol . then it broke into many pieces. I didn't get to my local store. I was all happy and excited about having a new belt and within oh 8 minutes, brrrrrrrrr. Uh oh. I was not a happy camper. I thought, ok I got a bad one. Let me order another one from another dealer. Same thing happened. Then I got a Gates. Those two cheap belts cost me about a dollar a mile. Not a good deal. At least I had free towing through my insurance company.

That's where I got most of my belts, from ebay. If it's the right size you should be good to go. The seller has a good feedback rating. I shoot for 99.7% good feedback or higher.

ok successfully changed the oil, now i would like to buy a belt but dont know what brand to get. i notice they have some on ebay for about $8 but are those good? Good comments. This was to be a comparison of the different variators out there, to help some day in selecting new ones ... which are good, which not so good, and why. There are lots of writeups about how to TUNE the thing after you have already bought one, but only anecdotal comments on which is "best". I hoped this would become a sort of library - with people adding lines as they measure their own variators. Then we all could buy smart. About tuning: Though there are lots of write ups about tuning, I have not found any that are very good. Maybe the authors skip too much, or maybe they actually don't understand all that well what they are doing. It occurs to me YOU could write a GREAT step-by-step everyone could understand and follow to get the most out of their engine. It would be a really good long-term way of 'giving back'. Maybe think about it? Sorry, RCQ. I walked in on the middle of the conversation and I misunderstood your intent. Great work man.

What? No kick in the fender with a steel-toed boot? No... I was wearing my favorite lizard boots... no steel toe, and a tad fragile. But I guess I didn't stop QUITE as short as I thought I had.
Yesterday when checking the oil before a trip to the store, I found the right lower plastic scuffed up, and broken away at the mounting point. There was some silver paint rubbed onto the part, and when I checked, sure enough some silver paint was rubbed onto my right boot.
Nothing a little epoxy and boot-polish won't fix... LOL!
It's AMAZING how my mind told me I stopped a foot short of the Lexus, but my scooter and my boot tell me differently. "The mouse" and I must have "bounced back" that foot and I never felt it! This is the phenomenon that makes "eye-witness identifications" so problematical, sometimes sending some poor soul to jail for something he didn't do.
Things just are NOT always what you thought they were...
Ride safe... and watch out fer them squirrels... They're dangerous when wounded!

Just wanted to start a thread and see what you all have done to your scooter today... Lets see today,I checked my oil,tire pressure applied silicone to the plastic/rubber,and now Im going for a ride,,but yesterday I was playing around with roller weights.. Hopefully I wont be doing anything other than basic maintenance and mods for a while...I may wash it tomorrow.. Happy scootin! I put some cool LED lights on my scoot. It looks good!

woohoo! I put 60 miles on the scooter this morning in a trek to the GA dept of driver services and got my motorcycle license! The ride in was soup. No one ever warned me about fog! I had quarter mile visibility but both the inside and outside of my helmet kept fogging over. My jacket is a fireman's jacket surplussed from a local station. it held up really well... not waterproof but definitely water resistant enough for me to stay dry. I got there and then waited on the course for about 20 minutes for the examiner to come. In that time, I was able to practice the course about 4 times. Before going in I was really worried as I only had about 135 miles/1 month worth of practice. But it was no problem at all. By the time that I finished, the fog had burned off and the sun was shining, temp was above 60F, and I had a motorcycle license. While I took the direct 23.3 mile route there, I took the scenic 38 mile ride home. Across a mountain (and the aptly named "Mountain Road") and through the country. Sweet! Good job, rdhood! Have a bone for doing it right!

Here is a pic of the variator I ordered . I'll post a few more pics later. I know quality is sometimes hard to tell from pics , but this k&s looks decent. The good thing is that its def a different cast then the koso and dlh variators. It was about twice as much in cost also. Depending on were u get your koso. That's a very nice looking finish. They even gave you an extra mm or two by cutting into the side walls. Looking forward to hearing how it works, Geh!

I am looking to purchase a second 150cc scooter, and there is one locally in a CL ad for $150... a Qlink. It is my understanding that this has a 1P58MJ water cooled engine. Should I seriously look at this scoot (the price is right for a new project) or should I pass and stick looking for a 150cc gy6-based scooter? What kind of scooter is it? Does it run? How's it look? Hard to turn down a 150 dollar scooter if it doesn't need much work. Scrappydog has a bunch of parts for that engine. Well boyz and girlz... Squirrel season is OPEN and the squirrels are driving and texting.
Thank God for disk brakes! Spring has sprung around here, and "squirrel-fever" is running rampant. Forget the drunks, idiots and those without thumbs masquerading as humans... LOL... It's the "texting while driving" crowd that seems to be my worst nemesis.
Being an old, Old-school biker, used to cable-pull mechanical drum-brakes on 900-pound hogs, I am MOST appreciative of the hydraulic disks on our scooters. But never more so than today.
On a 45 mph surface street (just before I'd turn into Wally World, of course) I came to a green-light at a cross-street with one of those flashing-yellow left-turn signals. I could SEE the fellow facing me, left signal on, and texting away, so I slowed down to 35 "just in case". Sure enough, as I got within about 80 feet of the intersection, he turned right in front of me, still texting.
This is the first time since I got old "Minnie Mouse" that I had to do an all-out, MAXIMUM-EFFORT panic-stop. The road was dry and warm with great traction, and I did the white-knuckle "gorilla-squeeze" on both brakes. The Kymco Honda-style, proportioned front/rear-wheel brake-application on the rear lever is GREAT, and the independent front brake is plenty strong.
The scoot slowed like I dropped an anchor, and finally the rear tire locked up, I didn't let up, and a second later the front locked and the mouse slid pretty straight, with the rear end eventually wandering out to the right. Of course, the driver NOW sees me and STOPS, blocking my path. Oh, THANKS a pant-load...
I let the rear end slide out completely sideways clamped down on the levers to completely lock the wheels and slide sideways, now wanting the mouse between me and the new Lexus... 340 pounds of impact-absorbing scooter between me and the car is more appealing than me launching through my own windshield and eating steel roof... LOL.
End of story, the mouse DID stop a foot short of the shiny new car, which took off like a shot.
Had I been riding ANY big bike of my youth, even though I slowed in "anticipation of stupid" I'd have still T-boned the car HARD.
Just a cautionary message to one and all. Look out for stupid. Now, WHERE did I put my SQUIRREL GUN last winter?... Only kidding, ONLY KIDDING! LOL!
So... Thank God and our Asian friends for hydraulic disks... Ride safe, and watch yer' six!

As far as the stupidhead driver letting it roll, at that point I'm betting his only thought was "CRAPCRAPCRAPCRAPCRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (replace with stronger cussing as appropriate). I mean, he was suddenly sitting in fire. When the other guy helped him out, you can see fire in his footwell. So at that point, he wasn't thinking about anything except not burning alive. It's the beforehand that makes him a stupidhead. That's when he should've done whatever to keep it there--brake, in gear, whatever. And then gotten out before it exploded to full engulfing fire. And I'm sorry to be hard, but the folks at the bottom behind the thing could've used one brain cell to think, "Hm. I'm not in a good place if that thing goes south...." And the folks running it should've immediately been clearing out everyone back there--"This might go south, need you to move 'til it's dealt with." I dunno. Maybe I just grew up watching too many horror and disaster movies, and automatically look for the potential danger to myself when something like that happens. >'Kat They were really slow. I think I would have moved when I saw it start rolling backwards. Then again maybe they are used to seeing that ditch stop trucks.

That's interesting , they say they do not currently have any agents to sell them in the US , so does that mean all the Koso's being sold here are fake ? No necessarily. Koso is a Taiwanese company. Do they have manufacturing plants in mainland China? Maybe. It's a well-known fact Chinese factories - regardless of whose they are - often suffer from product "growing legs and walking out the back door". It's apparently a 'business-cultural' problem in the country that a percentage of product simply vanishes, to be sold by whomever to someone who then tries to make a profit reselling the stuff. Sometimes these are factory rejects; sometimes just normal factory production. The things we see on EBay or even from some retailers here might be the end result of this - real Koso product that made it's way to America NOT through a legitimate Koso sales agent. Or it might be stuff made by an entirely unrelated company - probably of a MUCH lower standard - that some enterprising person though he could sell at a high price simply by having whoever made it mark it to look like it was from Koso. Given the variety of weights and shapes of the supposedly Koso products we are seeing, my guess is this is most likely. I'm hoping Koso will respond further. It's in their best interest to defend their reputation, after all, and here we are willing to help. Heck - maybe we could even arrange for some retailers to work directly with them so they could distribute their product - their REAL product - here. I'm hoping Gates responds also ...........
