OK so basically you aren't really talking about a washer but more of a shim that slides on the variator boss? If so we should stop calling it a washer because I think the point the Vespa guys had is people would open up the variator and remove any washer they found. Mine only had a very thin washer that slid onto the crank which I didn't think should be removed.

I was reading Vespa forums and there were some guys joking about 49cc guys removing washers found on the outside of the variator boss, and risking messing up their cranks, as if this washer was not there just to limit top speed. I found such a washer in my 49cc Eton Beamer, but not sure if I really want to remove it (it is very thin anyway) So I just changed rollers in my vespa GTS300 and indeed there was a washer in the same place, in the case of the Vespa I have a hard time believing it could be to limit top speed, my Vespa will do over 80 mph bone stock. so the washer must be there to distribute the load between the variator outer shell and the boss, and/or to help keep the vartiator nut from loosening? Suffice it to say I put the washer back in my vespa, as it cost me too much to risk messing up So what do you guys think about the washer issue?

I just got my 2T Eton Beamer fixed, the problem all along was a broken plug wire boot, taped it up good and no more arcing... but previous owner munged up the carb trying to fix it and had to replace the carb too, luckily they are pretty cheap.
Problem is when I start it, RPMs surge high enough to make the scoot want to take off, I can hold it back, but am giving this scoot to my wife to learn on and she may not be able to. Once the scoot settles down and choke is off the idle RPMs are perfect.
so what is wrong and can anything be adjusted?

Yeah it's not as bad now with a new carb... this one has a slightly longer tube and stronger return spring... still 1/8 of a turn dead space, calling it good now.

Hmmm, could a power drill on the variator nut start it?

I might take off the cover and put the scoot on the center stand, run it high speed and observe where the belt may be rubbing, if nothing else you can see first hand the belt behavior and troubleshoot

Might be time to swap in a new carb, even a name brand carb complete with the auto choke can be found for $50. Just try to match it as close as possible. Worst case you may need to do custom wiring. I mean what could be so special about the stock carb?

I was hoping someone knew for sure to save me time searching but after a couple hours digging I did find a service manual for Yamaha Jog finally, it says normal compression is 114 psi and service limit is 91, so it's right at the service limit. To me that says it should still run OK so low compression must not be the cause of bogging.
I do plan to put a BBK on it, but want to make it road worthy first to be sure the rest of the scoot is good before I put lots of money and effort into it

I don't mind a little slack, but there is a lot, I've never had a bike with so much. I don't think surging is much of a problem with a 49cc scooter I am beginning to suspect the wrong carb was installed, with a throttle tube on the top that's too short. May also be the cause of bogging problems, another carb is on the way.

I can't adjust out the slack even with the adjusters out all the way. The bike only has 1000 miles so I doubt the cable is stretched. That's why I thought something must be broken in the throttle grip.

It will do WOT no problem and open it all the way, the issue is when you are off the throttle there is like 1/4 turn of play on the hand grip, I assume there must be a stop at the throttle closed position too?

I have an eton beamer, I am trying to troubleshoot bogging above 1/2 throttle and low power (tops out about 15 mph, and struggles to get there), nothing I do is making any difference so did a compression check. I held the throttle wide open and cranked for a good 10-15 sec and it peaked out at just over psi. Specs for compression ratio are 6.9:1, pretty low, so I would expect compression to be low on a compression checker, but wonder if anyone knows for sure.

I recently bought a Eton Beamer 2-stroke 49cc scoot, thought it just needed adjustment, but I think the problem is the hand grip, it does not stop in what I think should be the rest position. However, nothing looks broken inside though and there are no parts rattling around.
So what stops the handgrip in the rest position, is it something in the hand grip or is it in the metal casing around it that clamps to the handlebars?
If it is in the hand grip, are these basically universal or specific to the bike?

I picked up a 04 Eton Beamer, has the 2-stroke Jog motor, looking into the 70cc BBK.
Going to derestrict with CDI cut and remove the variator washer of course, but looking for a good starting point on main jet (stock is 80) or what worked for you, and other mods needed to take advantage of the extra displacement.
Are there any other hidden restrictions besides CDI and variator washer that are easily changed? I want to keep the stock look if possible. I had a Kymco where I was able to drill out the air box inlet and cut out a restriction in the air tube, and drill the exhaust tip and weld on a wider one to open it up some more.

My Plan is to build a scooter so that someone else... my brother, ex wife (we still do stuff together), etc, can get a motorcycle permit and ride with me. We have great mountains, the largest lake in Ga, etc. Three day credit card trips (i.e. hole in the wall hotels along the way) would be a blast. I'm doing that too, with the exception of the ex wife... I am pretty sure my current wife would not want me hanging with her I sold my old scoot to my brother for next to nothing and he rides it everywhere. currently working on getting my wife into riding, I bought a 49cc for her to learn on (and me to tinker with).
