I recall someone put 179,000 miles on a 650 Burgman. At least 2 people are over 60K on 400 Burgs. I only have 17K. But I am getting disgusted at the amount (and cost) of routine service for most bikes, not just scooters. There is no reason we should have to futz with regular valve adjustments in 2017!

Yes, you are.
My wife doesn't...I think I've seen her in a skirt or dress maybe half a dozen times in 20+ years.

Nonsynthetic oil is fine for 9 5% of vehicles. I run it in my Burgman...because my Burg does not like synthetic, for some reason.
The only place I would bother with synthetic would be a hot-running, air-cooled bike. (Which is why my wife's Hyosung got synthetic.)

Many bikes are simply never inspected. My 2007 Helix had been in NH since it was new...the first inspection it even got was mine in 2013!

Why stop at 5 years? Why not require replacing tires every year, then? After all, a newer tire is "safer"!
My Burg has the original front tire (not quite six years old)-it is still pliable, shows zero cracking (stored inside when not ridden), and I will run it until it wears out!

Sure...while you're at it, let's have our benevolent government overlords prohibit other risky behavior...let's start with operating motorcycles! It's for your own good, after all!
I have seen 10-year-old tires I would use in a second, I have seen 3-year-old tires rotted badly enough to leak air. I have seen 8-year-old tires that passed a full X-ray test for recapping! An arbitrary date is stupid.

It's that panache thing all over again and again,,,why would anyone pay. $5000+ for a Vespa or basically north of $11,000 for the big burg when a gently used Yamaha fz6 with very low miles can be had for well under $4000 on CL,,, and the fz would kill the others stone cold dead,,,,and any Harley also except the vrod in a drag,,,once in the twisties the fz would kill the vrod too Because an FZ6 is a zoomsplat, not a scooter.

Consumer Reports has had a large GIGO problem for a very long time.

Hey, it is HYPERBOLE MAN!
Anyone throwing away tires because they hit some magic age, I need 235/55R17, 255/50R17, 33x12.50R16.5D, 215/75R15, and 265/70R17.

I run an am63 Avon Viper Stryke up front and a steel belted Pirelli Diablo in back. Cheap tires just aren't worth the hassle. (or potential danger) I have no complaints with the Shinko on my Burg...my wife is quite happy with the IRC on her PC800.

8,000 miles from a ten inch tire? I have 6,000 on my 150cc rear tire right now and and it's bald. My best mileage on a scooter rear tire was from a $70 Bridgestone ML-16 on the Fashion @ 6,300. Tires today suck. My OEM tire on my 1979 Kawasaki went 19,000 and I regularly got 14,000 from a rear tire no matter the brand. Fronts lasted 35,000 usually. NOT TODAY! My bikes blow through rears in 8,000 and fronts at 12,000. My 2000 W650 used the rear OEM by 6,000 and the front at 8,000. I ride like an old lady and the temperatures here rarely exceed ninety degrees. BTW. My front 10 inch tire on the 150cc is nine years old, has 9,700 and looks just fine. The rear OEM only lasted 3,000. Maybe the front has age hardened but it's not dry rotting. I'll keep it on there until it balds out in another 10 years or so. If I have to plug it, well so be it. I have the original front tire on my Burgman-figure I will have to replace it next year. Rear was replaced at 11k miles-5K on the Shinko. Motorcycle tires are a disgrace.

I would plug the tires on my Burg and not worry about it...but not a steel-belted tire, except as an emergency fix. (The belts can cut the plug.)

If either valve is open, you already screwed up. The rope trick works fine...when done correctly! i tend to agree with rocky on this one. you will be introducing a lot of foreign debris into your combustion chamber. a bent valve is a definite possibility. this reminds me of those videos you see on how you can adjust the valves on a 244cc while it's running. DO NOT try this, it WILL screw up your adjusters, i know, been there done that. the shop manual for the 244 calls for adjusting the valves cold on a engine that isn't running. One more time: if done CORRECTLY, it works fine.
