China started off the new year with an Orange Air Quality Alert for most of Central and Northern China leaving them one step from a full shutdown of Manufacturing, Construction and Schools. Currently Airports and Transportation are now shut down or have delays while on the Orange Alert. www.nytimes.com/aponline/2017/01/02/world/asia/ap-as-china-smog.html?_r=0This has got to be tough and the health costs along with upgrades to factories to reduce emissions are probably going to hit hard for years to come not to mention the impact to families suffering respiratory ailments.

This will affect production costs in China, raising product prices as a consequence; environmentally friendly stuff is expensive and someone has to pay for it, in this case the customers.

The estimates are that there are 1.4 to 1.6 million people who die in China every year due to the air pollution being so bad. Here are some recent pics: One can only imagine what its like to have your children rushed home from school or have a family member die because the air was too polluted to safely breath.

The numbers appear to be 1.4 to 1.6 million per year dying with the danger being for entire areas to become unlivable so more than a few thousand. They waited way too long to change their ways and are paying the price to catch up however they are now making the effort and the problem now has their full attention. A tough daily situation to be living with. Yes it almost happened here yet you still see naysayers wanting to delete systems designed to protect the air from their bikes patting themselves on the back for their ingenuity.

Besides the 24 elevated to Red state an additional 21 went to Orange a few days ago. Air quality I presume will be the #1 issue in China for a long time to come. The health costs will probably become staggering too. The hope is for a strong wind to come along and help clear things up.

I guess this is why the domestic Chinese market is turning more and more to E-scooters....And the price of wanting to catch up to the rest of the industrialized world "overnight"

It took them how many years to realize that the warnings about smoking were not simply American propaganda? They did finally learn that lesson even though sadly so many folks there died of emphesema and lung cancer with the numbers at crisis levels.

Have you ever modified a bike, mechanically? If so, you're a hypocrite. Different tire, better spark plug, more aerodynamic fairing, more efficient variator - Yes. Defeat pollution or air quality systems - BIG NO! My other car is a Zero Emmisions Plug In Electric with the less volitile air cooled batteries. Trying to be part of the cure and not a perpetuator of the problem. Won't resort to name calling of those trying to make a difference either and will leave that to the Internet Bullies.
