I bought a 2012 Tao tao atm50 in the late fall. I changed the oil today and there is no filter screen. Just an O ring. According to the generic manual I have, there is supposed to be a screen (looks like a spring in the picture). Does the ATM50 have an oil screen?

Reach in there with your finger a lot of times they get stuck up there. But it should have one. Alleyoop

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto]I did....but didn't feel anything....maybe I didn't go in far enough though. It would be bad I take it if it was loose in there.

I have the set up , oring , screen , spring and plug . The plug have cracked when doing an oil change it would be a great idea to keep a spare on hand . Its a cheap set .

I'm running with no screen, 12000 miles and no oil related issues. Although I make sure never to get dirt in there. Clean the dipstick before removing it. You can run without one but the risk goes up.

John Do you have a link or part numbers? Or is it the same for every 50cc Chinese scooter. Thanks BTW..in the manual I have, it looks like a spring, not a screen. Is the picture wrong?

The oil filter screen is a cheap, finger cap sized wireframe thingy, that basically only filters out the larger chips of metal; not the small flakes. It's basically a useless filter; save for the engine break in.

Do I need to drain the oil and give it a closer look?

The "filter/screen" fits inside the spring. That's the spring you see in your generic manual. That's 2 pieces.
O-RING: Are you talking about the softer o-ring that fits on the drain bolt, or the hard black ring that is supposed to be on the end of the filter screen?
With that being said--- I wonder if both, the "screen filter" and "spring", were even installed in the first place. I'm assuming you checked the dirty oil to see if they dropped down in it?
I've been sitting here thinking to myself for the last 30 minutes, what are the chances the screen filter could be floating in the crankcase? Well, if there wasn't a spring in there along with the filter screen (we don't know do we?)then the chances go up...? It almost seems as if that'd be the only way that it could be floating around---unless is wasn't properly installed to begin with. With the spring in there as well as the filter, then you'd really, I mean really, have to intentionally do some sabotaging. There just isn't a whole lot of room to work with in the drain hole opening, IMO-- especially with the spring holding the screen filter.
Even if the filter screen was floating around in there, who knows what damage, if any, would be done. I just don't see the oil violently whipping the filter around--- I envision it sitting at the bottom of the case, but I could be wrong?
