Hello, I am new to scooters, this forum, and this is my first post =)
I recently bought a Dazon GY6 50cc scooter.
Having trouble with the starter though. It works and turns over fine. The problem is that I do not have to pull in the rear brake or push the start button to engage the starer. I just turn the ignition switch on and it turns over.
The starter does not stop until I turn the ignition key switch off...
I just purchased and installed a new starter solenoid/coil. I tried going back to the old one and the problem still happens.
Does anyone know what may be causing this and how to fix it?
Thanks!

Did this also happen before you bought the new solenoid?
You either hooked up to a wire that is always hot when the key is on or your start button switch and or brake switches are stuck in the on position.

disconnect starter wire. Turn scooter on see if brake light is stuck on. Possible but not so likely: sounds like a backfeed of electrical power coming through the tail light. Disconnect the plug to the tail light assembly and see if the circumstance goes away. If so there is a short in either the lamp itself or the 2 contacts on the end of the bulb are touching. Thus feeding 12 volts back through the brake light circuit to the starter solenoid/ relay Yeah!!!

unplug the plug at the solinoid , that should stop the engine from cranking . Then you can check for power at the plug , then work from there . I would say it is not the brake circuit , But could be part of it . You migh try pulling the plug on the starter switch .

Thanks for the replies!
Its possible that I have plugged the solenoid into the wrong location?
I just bought this scooter and it was not fully assembled. The guy I bought it from didnt have time to work on it.
The only connection I could see that would fit the solenoid was a plug right near the back brake light. I did not see any other connections for it. I may have it hooked up wrong...
Where is the solenoid supposed to conect to?

the battery and the starter , then to engage the switch action of the solinoid is the starter button .

Alright.... I'm a bonehead....
Had the solenoid plugged into the wrong connector...
Found the right one tucked away next to the frame and it only turns over when I pull in he brake and press the start button now.
It still was not starting after the fix. Pulled the new plug and not getting any spark. May have to get new starter coil for the plug.
Anything else I should try to get the spark?

Haha I met a rude guy on a Honda Metro that after I said I liked his scooter he asked if mine was a Chinese clunker . I said no its not and nice drum brakes you have as mine has disc F&R . I started my scooter up but he was unable to start his . After a few tries I clicked the killswitch for him as we were outside a store . It was funny to see him embarrassed after being so rude . You are far from the only one who wondered why it would not start with the killswitch was not in the run position . I leave mine on and use the key to turn it off . This prevents a goof and does not wear out the switch .
In both brake levers is a brake light switch which must be engaged first before power is sent to the starter as a safety precaution . Some have a killswitch in the kickstand to prevent it from jumping with it down . If the brake light does not work on a lever you should be able to with the other one prividing it works . I had one go out on me was a simple 2 wire and 1 screw to change out the switch on my Echarm .
It is common to have a short or ground wire come loose on a scooter , so its a good idea to give it a go over since bought used . Nuts and bolts will get loose on every scooter from vibrations of riding and bumps so take your time and make sure everything is tight to be safe

Cool - thanks for the suggestion on giving it a onceover to check for loose stuff.
I got a sweet deal on that thing, and it only has 320 miles on it - its really not even broke in yet, but it sat so long I have to replace some stuff.
It is missing some screws, like ones for the battery cover, so I will have to find some that fit.

Would change the engine oil with any car 10w40 regular and later on go synthetic after the break in . Should have a lil ring dust in first couple of oil changes and keep an eye on the level . Most take 750mls just under a quart , Most use GL5 80w90 gear lube in the final gear drive area .
It is has been sitting up pour in some Seafoam to clean out any build up the fuel lines and carb
A NGK sparkplug performs much better than any other and some scooters have a Torch brand of sparkplug that is junk . I think I had NGKDPR7EA or it may be one I had in my 150 . Hopefully someone will say if its the same or not for the 50cc .
All screws and bolts will be metric . Harbor Freight sells screw gauges so you can measure the diameter , length and thread count

Cool - thanks for those suggestions as well!
I already cleaned the carb out so hopefully that will be good for a little while.
The scooter even smells brand new when its running - only let it idle for about a minute or so....
It needs a new rear brake cable, and I think thats the reason for the brake light staying on (another issue I found).
The previous owner changed the oil, I checked it out and it looks brand new.
I did get a brand new NGK installed (C7HSA) and it fires nice. I did not change the gap on it, so maybe it came pre-gapped.
Ordered some replacement parts off eBay tonight - should be on the road in the next few days!
