Got a Taotao 150cc. I have some chatter at speeds from 5 to 25 mph. When I get up to speed, I don't hear the chatter, just the engine. If I let off the throttle and coast to lower speeds around 10 mph, I can hear the intensity of the chatter increase with each turn of the wheel. I'm thinking CVT, variator, sliders, belt, clutch, but I'm a newbie when it comes to the drive mechanisms--never taken this stuff apart. Where do I begin to look?

sounds like it needs a valve adjustment. i'm completely new to the mechanics of scooters also so perhaps wait until someone more experienced responds. but if it was me, i would check the valve's.

i am NOT a mech, where is the chatter coming from, left hand side by the CVT, OR from the engine?
but id check your belt quickly. CVT cover has 8 maybe 10 bolts pull it off & look. if you have a air comp. blow it out.
and then your valves. ever check 'em? know how to adjust 'em ? .0004 in & .0005 out are good starting points.

Thanks terrilee. From what I can tell, the chatter is coming from the left side, so I'll check the CVT first. I've got an air compressor, so I'll clean it out.

Also check the speedometer cable input gear housing and if you have front drum brakes check where they are held in place on the forks. If they will move at all shim them and see if the noise goes away. That's what was making noise at low mph on mine. If not it only takes about 5 mins of your time before you go tearing into stuff

It could just be your weights that are worn down and they do make a sound like little metal balls bouncing around. Alleyoop

Alleyoop It does kind of sound like that, but the scooter is only 3 months old with 1,500 km (about 1,000 mi) on it. Here's a video I shot of the chatter, which I think is coming from the CVT. Any ideas? I'm planning on taking off the CVT cover to inspect.

My rollers rattled in my TaoTao as well . I thought it was a crank bearing so I checked the oil and it was ok . Rollers develop flat spots which prevent them from rolling so they rattle . Factory rollers are not as hard as HP aftermarket ones like Dr Pulley which also makes sliders that slide instead of roll . Sliders last longer and perform better . I switched my 12g rollers at 5,500 on my Echarm even though they barely had any wear with 12g Dr Pulley sliders . I gained 5 MPH more on top end and it has a much better acceleration at any time . Replaced the belt at 12,000 miles the sliders were great and replaced the glides on the variator

Nothing out of whack, so it's most likely the rollers as you pointed out. thanks again!

Hey guys, it may not be the rollers. I found a set of marks that the belt made inside the bottom of the CVT cover. And now that I think about it, the chatter is kind of like belt noise. Could the belt hitting the CVT cover be the problem? And if so, what to do? I don't have any idea of how to fix that problem. Here's the long winded video of disassembly and CVT inspection. Or look at the attached photo of the belt marks--that's the short version. Attachments:

Seems like it indeed. Get a higher tension spring of some sort... On my TaoTao ATM50 I also get belt noises; most likely due to a low tension (pulley, or variator?) spring. From the factory they use low tension springs, to increase performance, and lower belt wear. When the spring is worn a bit, it may be that the belt gets a bit on the loose side.
That, paired with the sliders (if you're talking about the EVO), which are pretty tardy (meaning when you let go of the throttle, they keep the variator in high gear downto ~2k RPM before sliding down), may be the reason behind the belt slipping. It needs more tension.
Solution.. for as long as the belt isn't slipping on the clutch or variator, you could put some grease on the end of the belt, or open up the CVT case on the bottom, or increase belt tension by changing one of the springs (I do not know which one).
I myself don't have the problem you mention, but then again, my EVO150 only has ~500 miles on it.

No need to remove the kickstart as its attached to the cover . I thought it went all the way through the first time I removed it too . How many miles on it ? Belts do stretch and need replacing on all scooters with a CVT . What size belt do you have ? It looks like its hitting in the picture and wear on outeredge of belt in video . Only use Gates Powerlink or even better Bando brand of belts as the generic ones are junk that wear out fast and well known to break . Unsure how many miles most get out of their belts as my Echarm has a Honda V belt style with a Bando ( made for CFMoto relabeled CFMoto and made in Japan instead of China like Gates ) . Visual inpections as well as measure the width with a caliper to see its thinner than the numbers on the belt . First is length , second with and 3rd is angle . Scooters have many moving parts besides the engine so it will make sounds .

Should I replace the belt at this point? I was thinking of Naraku, but should I go with Gates or Bando instead?
