Same road bump. Two weeks ago I was driving down this road (it's a long downhill section) at 60 or 65mph when I got launched by this bump. Both wheels off the road. When the scooter hit again it was violent enough it broke the weld on the engine hanger (the only thing holding the engine on). Note the tube that holds the engine bolt only had about 1/2 inch of weld left: BUT THAT WAS NOTHING !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yesterday afternoon - in rush hour traffic - I came down the same road. This time looking carefully to avoid whatever i went flying off 10 days earlier, this time only going 50 or so mph. Car in front, car behind, cars on both sides. Unfortunately, I didn't see the "bump" until both wheels were a foot or 2 off the ground. This time the landing was worse. Handlebar went sharply left, then right, then left ... 4 or 5 rapid left/right snaps to the front wheel as the suspension bounced. Somehow - I have no idea how other than God - the scooter didn't turn sideways and start flipping through the air, with me somewhere flying also. And with all the cars on all sides, the chances of NOT ending up under someone's wheels would be pretty low. Then it straightened out - somehow. 100 yards later had to stop at a red light - guy behind me rolled down his window and yelled out, "Hey - buddy - are you OK???" Went back today to make sure I know where this "bump" is. Almost invisible going toward it since it's like a ski jump - s smooth transition and then a sharp upward ramp of 6 or 8 inches - then an abrupt stop to the ramp you literally fly off. Only in the CENTER of the lane, so cars are not affected at all (unless they bottom out going above it). Doesn't look like much here, but oh boy is it exciting: I have some pavement marking paint (red) somewhere. Think I'll go back at night and at least outline this thing so another dance with death doesn't happen.

I'm happy to hear you are okay. That would have been a very nasty spill.
Did the fix to the engine hanger hold up this time?

You took the idea right out of my head.

Oh man, Those are the wost. At higher speeds they look like flat pavement until you are practically above it, and at night just fughettaboutit!
You know you've documented this pretty well, I'd say to file a claim with the state or whoever owns the road to cover the recent hangar repairs and such.

Another reason to not ride in the center of the lane. Glad you kept it upright, I bet your heart still races when you think about it!

I think your idea to mark the spot is wise, but I'd put something in white to better see it coming at night.

You will probably be violating an ordinance by marking the road yourself so better just call 911 and they will take care of sending out fire or police to direct traffic around that area until a DPW Crew can get out there and repair the heave in the roadway.
First action when encountering a dangerous situation on a public street is to call 911 and report it so that the proper agencies can be engaged before anyone else is harmed or suffers a loss. No different then reporting a downed wire, broken water main or debris blocking the roadway.
Overweight trucks are many times to blame for this as their wheels sink in and distort the center of the lane causing heaves especially if they sat for an extended stop on a hot day.

So, so so pissed off.
So it's clear this ski-jump bump is going to get someone killed. Have to do something.
Several suggested calling the Dept. of Roads ~~~ but this is California .... 1/8 inch east of the USSR. A report to the gov't, if it resulted in anything at all, would not do so until at least the year 2025. The only solution was to paint the road as a warning. Anyway, maybe that would embarrass the local gov't into doing somehting about it.
So Wednesday I went to HomoDopo and got a can of neon marking spray paint. But what about the logistics??
Rocky is right - if caught it's probably a fine or lifetime prison sentence. Also - it's a busy main road .... and have to do so when there is at least some time to dry before cars run over. So, I decided to get up at the crack of dawn Sunday (today) and do the covert assault then.
Up at 5:30 today; out of the house at 5:45 with paint can in hand. The plan - park, leave the car running, do the evil deed and scamper off.
Drove the several miles to the ski jump ...
AND THE BASTURD ROAD CREWS HAD ALREADY BEEN THERE !!! NOTHING BUT NICE NEW PAVEMENT. AND I GOT UP AT 5:30 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I can figure is some Union boss, or may an illegal alien, got injured by the ski jump. What else could have motivated the gov't to act so quickly ?
And I repeat --- GOT UP AT 5:30 !!!!!!!!!
