I am on Yahoo Answers, motorcycles. Because of you and others on this forum I tell people that Cheap Chinese Crap *can* be reliable. Lol. I used to get on Yahoo Answers ALL the time peaking around probably 2008-2009. I remember I'd look for scooter questions and when I found one half the answers would be (with no real input) "that's why you don't buy Chinese!", "You should have bought a Honda or Yamaha", "You're lucky it hasn't fallen apart yet", "Just push it off a cliff and buy a Yamaha!". Hahaha, it kind of cracks me up. I remember there was this one guy who would show up on every question posting things like I quoted above.

Most of the self-styled "experts" have never owned a Chinese scoot, and are just repeating friend-of-a friend of someone's cousin-who knew a guy, who heard it from some guys sister who might have owned one.

ive always thought it was a self justification for spending so much more money than the chinese scooter crowd.. and seeing them putt down the street often... so to build myself (via my choice to buy brand x or y) i must tear you down (via your awful craptastic choice to buy anything but brand x or y)
that said.. i see this much more online and not in person.. thankfully.
the scooter community is much friendlier than i thought.. and we seem to just try to look out for each other.
almost everytime ive had an issue and was working on the side of the road.. or shoving my bike somewhere else to perform repairs.. at LEAST one guy comes rolling up on his bike.. stops and genuinely tries to help.
now i know that doesn't make a good case for the argument that anything not brand x or y could be good.. but i admittedly am abuseful (its my only transportation.. rain, shine, snow, etc.. im going to be at work.. on time..) and not the most mechanically inclined..
anyways.. sorry to derail..
15k miles is quite an achievment. good job man.

15k miles is amazing....
I actually really, really like the Chinese bikes but, yes the big names have the build quality.... but for bang for the buck? Chinese is good value for money.
You will NEVER have problems with the Yammy, Honda, or Piggie.... And the plastics, just fit on those bikes.... But the Chinese scooters have the same fun factor, for alot less money, but you *MIGHT* have to do a few things depending on who you bought it from. So what... it's not hard, and you get to know your bike. Some of are even twisted enough in the head to consider working on our bikes fun.

The price difference is leveling off between the larger Chinese Scooters and the others so to me the real bargain is at model year changeover when the factory incentives are on. Got my Aprilia 250 for $2,999 and am closing in on 30,000 miles much of which are Interstate miles cruising the day at 70+ mph. The bike is not burning oil and continues to run great. Walked into the local Piaggio dealer the other day and you'd be surprised what they are willing to let the BV350 go for. The BV500 models are stacking up as people trade them in with very low mileage on them (3,000 or less) to get the new BV350cc bikes and they can be had for less than the cost of even a drop shipped 250.
I really liked my Lance but the value was not there due to the inherent weaknesses in the GY6 design. If someone would spec them with a longer clutch shaft with a bearing in the cvt cover to support the loose end that would go a long way on making the transmission more solid and less prone to the destructive vibrations many experience which shake the exhausts and rear body sections to pieces. A slightly better oil pump with the ability to support an oil filter would also go a long way toward enhancing long term durability and allow much less frequent oil changes. These two enhancements should not raise the cost per unit by more than $50 but would greatly increase the value of the bikes. Imagine a GY6 with those features that could go 4,000 to 6,000 miles between oil changes and not be prone to failures from the shaky clutch shaft design. For many where I live that would make it a daily commuter bike that would only need 1 oil change per year with belt changes every 2 years.
15,000 trouble free low maintenance miles with a run of the mill GY6 bike would be an accomplishment. On the Yamaha designed 257cc engine that Mike has I would have wished that it would not be burning oil yet. Hope to continue hearing good news from Mike at 20,000+.

I have a post on it somewhere - I'm burning about 1/3 liter every few hundred miles but you'd never know. engine is tuned in, exhaust is clear - I only noticed it when I went to do an oil change and there was almost no oil in the reservoir.
