The carbon fiber armor on my 2XL sized gloves may have made a similar minor blemish on his fender when the tire hit my foot. Drivers like that make me wish sometimes that I had the gloves with the stainless steel armored bits instead. Had a guy in a Isuzu Rodeo give me some adventure yesterday evening as he pulled from a parking lot right out into the middle lane in front of me doing about 30 mph below the flow of traffic. Had a Yellow Cab to my right, a Sprinter Van to the left and a Dualy Pickup behind me. Glad the Aprilia has twin front discs. Didn't think the truck behind me was going to be able to stop in time but he did. Guy then realized he really wanted to be in the right lane and cut off the Yellow Cab to get back there. Gives me a drity look after he pulled a stunt like that and makes a comment about bikers thinking they own the road. Maybe I should have layed on the horn and swerved around splitting the lane and leaving a bar end weight track in his paint instead of doing an edge of adheasion panic stop and taking my chances with the Dualy. hehe.. one of the first lessons i got in riding was watch out for the other guy. i worked at a bbq joint and one of the guys had a fast crotch rocket he loved .. and loved to share stories.. he started getting tired of people running him off the road.. so he got into the practice of kicking the bejesus out of a car when it started coming over... never had to do that.. but i have been tempted once.. glad your foot wasn't worse leo! and that poor grand daughter!

update...
(as this problem continues to be resolved)
the other day after a nice 20 minute ride, everything seemed fine. until a couple hours later when i go to work only to find that it will not start. something seems wonky.. it begins to start and then just wont.. and the kickstart isn't sounding good at all.. something isn't right.
take off the cover, and the bendix is messed up. replaced that. still won't start. showing the same signs that there is resistance on the starter that is preventing it from engaging the bendix fast enough to get the engine started. drained the oil, filled it up. same deal. my mechanic buddy says he is certain he has figured it out.
this all started after a clutch change and roller weight change. he says that something is going on in the variator that is preventing the gears from matching up properly. off by milimeters. he says he is goign to take it apart today, replace the sliders/guides (one of which was on the way out) and suspects that it is a part of the equation. not sure if he is going to have to put a gasket on the case.. as when the case is on but not tight, the engine will start up just fine.
its only when you tighten the bolts to the CVT case that it prevents it from starting.
fun fact, the new starter turns over the engine worse.. suggesting that the old starter was 'worn in' to a slight change in the orientation of something in the assembly there..
i just want my darn scooter back.. i have a redbox movie that is now costing me 6 bucks and need to pay my rent (need a ride for both)
lol.. first world problems i know.. but.. i need my bike fixed.
also another fun fact, the engine wouldn't start w/ my carb on it.. but would just fine w/ another (w/ the cvt case bolts on but not tight.

got the power issue sorted.. it was shorting out from a loose connection.. so the choke and the headlights are functional again.. tried tuning the carb to match the uni filter. had an jet in.. tried an 80.. did the same thing.. it can't handle wide open throttle.. it bogs down.,. if i let up.. it goes ok.. and once its at speed it can go full throttle ok.. so then put a 78 jet.. its a little better.. thinking this uni just is going to be hard to get tuned for my bike.. which sucks.. i suppose ill keep trying smaller jets.. before i give up and just go to the standard airbox.

the saga continues..
my buddy says.. ok.. just take the filter off altogether.. let it run unrestricted and see what happens. it ran way worse. undrivable really. if given just a bit too much throttle it would almost stall.
something that i had also noticed was that my headlights are out.. both hi and normal.. and even the indicator on the dash (that displays when the setting is on bright).. and everything seems to be connected fine.. in addition, i had some day running lights that were fed off the same line that do not work.
suspicions now are that that something is going on in the power area of my bike (stater?).. as the carb does have an automatic choke, that's default is set to on. if something is up w/ the stater or one of the wires or connections, its not sending the signal to turn off the auto choke, and would explain the issues im having..
hopefully will find out this saturday...
if not.. adjusting needle and or jets.. im going to get it dialed in.

love this show!
never gone that fast, but boy does it look fun! i try not to get too caught up in the semantics of if they are street cars or not.. i just follow the logic that, they aren't on a super prepped road.. and are on one that cars drive on regularly..
you can see the support when someone comes w/ a race track car.. and can't get it to hook on the untreated pavement..
really good show.. excited for this new season..

ok.. so he isn't the greatest mechanic... he is .. old school and unconventional..
he did take the plug out.. and turned the engine over many many times but the oil (or gremlins) didn't come out. he was feeling compression w/ his finger in the plug hole .. dont think he has a compression tool tbh...
sooo...
put the uni air filter on today... now when i try to run wide open it bogs down.. it runs ok as long as i keep it at half throttle or so.. but full throttle it starts slowing down and just doesn't sound good..
will be so pleased when things are finally running well again...

didnt put the old plug in... as it was one w/ a resistor and my mech swears they are bad if you have a resistor in the spark cap as well... not sure the quality of this plug.. ill definitely check that here after work... my old plug (the one before the iridium one) is sitting right here and really wasnt in bad shape at all.. i just wanted to see what all this iridium buzz was about... (still am i guess...)
not sure whats going on.. it could be restriction from the airbox..
as to why it was working before and not now.... my theory is... it wasn't getting enough fuel before.. the petcock would work.. but really struggled.. like when you manually check it.. (using your mouth on the vacuum tube) it barely was letting any out.. the new one is working proper.. it gushes out as it is supposed to..
its been raining all week.. and while i still ride to work.. im not fool enough to do work on it until it dries up a bit. am seeing the sun for the first time in a few days.. maybe ill get to check that plug and put on the new filter... i hear good things about uni's...
edited to add- thanks lain and the rest of the gang for helping me out. it is noticed and appreciated!

they really are fun..
so simplistic.. just turn the throttle or pull the break handles.. lean.. and enjoy the wind..
it is really fun when you can get your bike peppy to where it has 'fun' acceleration.. feeling the torque and loving the ride...
never saw any appeal to motorcycles.. always said i would kill myself.. well when the state said i could not longer drive a car due to my own poor decisions, and after getting tired of riding my bicycle 26 miles round trip to a physically demanding job.. i got a scooter...
oh the mistakes i made.. and the lessons i learned.. but in the end.. most of the time when im out riding i have a grin on my face and just generally enjoying the experience...
sucks when its really bad weather.. but.. i must pay my dues from my poor decisions.. that and tbh.. i don't know if i really want to go back to a car... scooters are sooooo darn cheap.. everything from the gas it takes to the parts and repairs.. (no more.. oh no.. my transmission is broken and ill never be able to afford fixing it)
aside from getting tattooed by the occasional flying insect, and inclimate weather.. and limited cargo space.. i really enjoy the scooter experience much more than a car.. you really feel more connected to the road and machine and feel more integral to making everything function properly.. very satisfying..

ive always thought it was a self justification for spending so much more money than the chinese scooter crowd.. and seeing them putt down the street often... so to build myself (via my choice to buy brand x or y) i must tear you down (via your awful craptastic choice to buy anything but brand x or y)
that said.. i see this much more online and not in person.. thankfully.
the scooter community is much friendlier than i thought.. and we seem to just try to look out for each other.
almost everytime ive had an issue and was working on the side of the road.. or shoving my bike somewhere else to perform repairs.. at LEAST one guy comes rolling up on his bike.. stops and genuinely tries to help.
now i know that doesn't make a good case for the argument that anything not brand x or y could be good.. but i admittedly am abuseful (its my only transportation.. rain, shine, snow, etc.. im going to be at work.. on time..) and not the most mechanically inclined..
anyways.. sorry to derail..
15k miles is quite an achievment. good job man.

havent put the uni on yet..
the jet that is in it now is likely a bit too big for the airbox.. although.. before this all happened.. it did run fine..
will try to sort this out after work today.. thanks for the ideas...

heh.. i swear.. i love scooters.. but they can be aggrevating when they have issues..
so.. my scooter is starting great.. but its not running as good as it was... it has less power.. it also is doing this thing where after its run WOT for a while, and then I stop. When I first give it gas, it hiccups.. what I mean is it does nothing for a moment.. does not stall and then goes back to running ok. it only does this after it has run WOT for a couple of minutes. If after it hesitates, I back off and try to duplicate it.. nothing happens.. its only when I run it for a bit.. then stop.. that it hesistates/hiccups..
and ofc, when this all happened, I had just had my CVT worked on... new clutch, and put in replacement roller weights. (5 gram weights) -
my acceleration isn't as good.. but the top end is ok.. thought maybe it was the roller weights as it wasn't accelerating as well.. but the top end is ok.. but the weights are light.. and the engine doing that hiccup thing makes me believe it is something else.
Just got my uni air filter in the mail to replace my airbox.. my buddy said that could cause some of the issues.. but it didnt when the airbox was on before..
not sure if its a vacuum line getting squeezed.. but we did check that... (when I first got the scooter back from him.. it ran ok.. at a stop light it died.. and then would start but die after giving throttle.. a vacuum line was pinched and we fixed that... (or thought we thought) and its been running fine at lights except for that momentary hesitation and lack of full power..
one more hint.. it ran better this morning when cold and as it warmed up it ran worse.
sorry to ask so many questions...

well again.. this is what he says.. but that if a bikes orientation is wrong.. (too much on its side and not straight up and down) that its not uncommon for oil to get into the engine... and that normally it doesn't cause big problems bc there is normally enough wear on the rings for the engine to work it out of the engine.. since mine is essentially new..and not worn enough.. the oil was trapped.. i know that a bike being on its side can be really hard to start afterwards.. and ive always assumed that it was from oil being able to get where it was not supposed to. sad thing is.. this all could have been avoided by just draining my oil... ba dum tis... Transport the Scoot Correctly. Easy wheel Chock can be made from 2X4's or old Pallet wood, 2 tie downs from Harbor freight That is the lesson to be learned.. although tbh.. my belt broke while on my lunch break and it was all i could do to find a ride.. didn't have time to build anything..
