Bent valves from plastic. Plastic melted onto spark plug disabling spark. Dirty carb. As said before, if it starts with starting fluid than it is a fuel problem. If it doesnt start on starting fluid, then check for spark. If you have fuel and spark by no run then next thing would be an air issue. Bad compression or something.

Doesn't seem likely as you were just ridding it the day before but its still a possibility. Could just be a tight valve sticking open, or neither! When was the last time you adjusted your valves?

The bike is only 6 months old and I have already adjusted the valves once (last time I had a problem). Suppose my next step really is the compression test. At least that will tell me I I have a knackered engine!

Yea, it's a simple check that can bring a lot of relief

Have you checked the compression? If you do not have a compression gauge use the old finger trick. Take the plug out stick your finger in the hole and hold it nice and firm in there. OPEN the throttle wide open and HOLD IT AND CRANK IT. If it has compression it will blow your finger off the hole if you just fill a little pressure or nothing then you have an internal problem.
After that I would adjust your valves .004 inchs both of them Leave the valve cover off and crank it over and see if the valves are moving up and down. Alleyoop

still no joy!!!!! Ive checked valves and they are still set at 004. There is absolutly no sign of life at all. its not even trying to start! ive changed the coil and spark plug and its still getting a good strong spark. i havnt managed to check compression with a tester yet but have put my finger over the spark plug hole and cranked the bike over and although i cant keep the hole plugged, i wouldnt say its a super strong force. really really struggling for ideas now. it wouldnt be so bad if it at least showed signs of starting but it doesnt.

is there any way of checking the side stand kill switch? just to check if thats causing it? If you are getting spark while the plug is grounded on ther motor it is not any kill switch.

Spray some carb cleaner or dribble some gas in the intake nipple and see if it fires. If so then you need to figure out why gas isn't getting thru the carb.
I've got to leave for the dentist now. I'll check in when I get back.

Which intake nipple? Can't do anything just now as its freezing and bike is back in the shed for the night.

Pull the vacuum hose off of the nipple on the intake manifold in front of the carb.
