50 cc Binelli with 139qmb motor. Runs great but pings or detonates on steep grades. I fill up a 5 gallon gas can as I know about a gallon in the hose is 87 octane . Could the cdi unit be advancing the ignition timing too much or not enough? Otherwise the scooter runs flawlessly. I use Stabil in the gas and oil level is good. The scooter has 300 miles on it but it has done this from day one. Help! And thanks!

timing too advanced or the gas youre using is not  ,,,there should be no detonation ,,you sure it's ping?,,,just sayin |

Pinging, knocking sound only on uphill. Timing advance is electronic via cdi box. I pumped the gas do its according to the pump, so I can try a different pump. Or it could be the carb is lean on the main jet. Both conditions would cause the engine to ping. Guess I'll just avoid uphill grades Ha ha Or get a big bore kit as its probably what I need in my area, lots of hills. |

How about switching gas stations.....find one that has a dedicated hose for each grade.....or better yet, one that sells gas without the moonshine added. Just make sure that it too, is delivered through a hose, that dispences only that product.

It could also just be a tight engine that is running hot and needs to be broken in or possibly the run-in valve adjustment needs to be done now.
Did you change the engine and gear oil along with the brake fluid the moment you received the bike? Most come only with a shipping oil and lube in them and require that to be drained out and replaced with the oil specified in the owners manual before you start riding them and are not supposed to be put to heavy use like WOT up a grade until after they are broken in and have the 500 mile oil change and valve adjustment taken care of.

I'm going to agree that it shouldn't be the gas. Shell is a top-grade gas, which does make a diff.
Although I'll admit that since learning QT buys their gas from Shell (and whoever), I have switched to QT gas since I get a Chopper discount. Plus they truly do guarantee it--if anything happens to the engine from the gas, they pay all expenses. Plus plus newer QTs have a pure gas pump, which made a big diff for my old Taurie-wagon (SIGH!)
But wouldn't hurt to try a diff station. Water apparently can sometimes get into the station's main tank and goober up things. If a diff station eliminates the ping, then go back to your usual and tell them.

Its a new engine with only a few hundred miles on it so it will be off on many fronts and needs to be broken in and the break in services then completed. Once its broken in then you can dial in the carb adjustments after ensuring the valves are set correctly.
