Anyone recommend an online site or a program for this? Considering scootering to the convention i just got home from, but want to compare routes for mileage and such. And this all assumes i've upgraded to at least a 150 by then. The wrinkle is that i'm not expecting to use the interstates to make the trip from Hazelwood MO to Olive Branch MS, and while Waze is great for that on my phone while i'm on the road (aside from massive battery drain), trip planning with it isn't so good. Google Maps on the other hand is rigid about its routes, you either take the interstate, or if you choose no highways, it'll go far out of its way to avoid them (my guess its adding about 75 miles to this trip). I need something i can use on my computer that has Waze's intelligence really.

try mapquest.com you can type in where you are starting from where you are going to, filters for no freeways etc. and can also click and drag the route if you want to take a different way than it shows.

Can't hurt to try, but the running problem with Gmaps is that it will fight you in every way possible, if you set it to avoid highways, it won't let you adjust your route to use one, and if you don't tell it to, it'll fight to use one every time, no matter how stupid it is.

You can try to change the mode of transportation from car to walking or bicycling and see what it will show you.

You can try to change the mode of transportation from car to walking or bicycling and see what it will show you. Tried, but running into the same basic problems, rigid refusal to let you use freeways, you can see it on my trip to Memphis, any non freeway option sends you south of the I55 bridge to the first non-freeway/interstate bridge on both GMaps and MapQuest. Considering the size of the trip, i need a good, solid estimate of trip length. Ideally a mapping solution would allow me to build a route dot by dot and tell me the mileage.

not sure if it falls in your guidelines, but i purchased a program that runs on a desktop computer called "talking maps" from cosmi software.
this program will allow to to use the "determine my best route" or it will let you decide on which route to take.
i found it best to let the program determine the best route, usually state and federal roads, then erase the route and determine my own route.
the route can be printed.
be advised this program is way out of date, at least by 10 years, so beware of roads that no longer exist. it might not even be sold anymore. the program is reasonably accurate in estimating length and trip times.

ttp.aaa.com/TripTik/ -- can do "no highways", but I prefer to simply keep moving the route to non-freeway roads.

I need something i can use on my computer that has Waze's intelligence really. I don't know if this is any help, but here is what I do. I punch in start and end points online or in my phone's GPS. I then look over the route to get a basic understanding of what my trip will look like. I then do whatever I want to do. I let the GPS tell me where to go, until I get to some point where I want to take a different route, and then I let the GPS reroute me. You may tell it you don't want freeways, but if you jump on the freeway, it has to reroute with the road you are on. If it's a long trip, I usually have a good enough idea of how I'm going to get there, that I know what I want to do ahead of time, to some extent. i.e. "When I get to this point, I'm going to get off of road X and drive over to road Y and let the computer reroute from there. At worst I might have to pull over once in a while to get oriented with what I am going to do next. When travelling, I kind of let it just happen. If I decide to take a different route, half way through the trip, then so be it.
