Genuine Roughhouse isn't cheap, but is 2 stroke and will be kinda good after de-restricting without doing a BBK and other warranty destroying things. They are even offering a 3 year warranty free this month. But they are like $2,200 or more.....booo! On the other hand I can pick up new Taotao ATM50's for $650 + tax here locally. I could buy 3 of them for the same price, or 1 and add $350 in mods for 1/2 the price of the Roughhouse. I want the 50cc for Michigan's "mopeds don't require insurance, a title, a license plate or a helmet" rules. But I do want to putt down some 40mph-45mph roads and not get run over. What are my options? Or am I just retarded? I have a lot of rice rocket tools, but I'm not that much of a grease monkey. After a 6-pack and a couple YouTube videos I think I'm a great mechanic as long as I stay in front of the computer.

I say pony up and get a 150cc. Insurance is cheap (why would you drive without it?), License plate fairly cheap, Helmet (don't be a statistic!). Take the class, if Michigan has/requires it, it's fun and you will learn things to help keep you alive like wear a helmet! If you want to go 45mph do it cheap and easy, buy a 150cc done.

Taotao ATM50's BBK and taller gears...... Or if you do not want to violate the 50cc rule new exhaust better carb taller gears port matched and polished. No matter what something has to be removed added or swapped out violating a warranty. Smearing snake oil all over wont make it go faster, but it will not violate a warranty either.

I don't mind a BBK on a cheap ATM50. Heck, that's what they are made for right? I'd only do a 72CC or so just because I want it to last a couple years. What's taller gears? A variator thing? Around here officers won't check out your scooter unless you are like doing wheelies, running with no muffler, or 10MPH over the speed limit. I'm an old man. I'll put a "Free Donuts for Cops!" bumper sticker on the back Or maybe "Gay policeman are sexy!", That will keep them away from me LOL - Joe

A 50 can be fun so long as there's no hills involved.

The only issue I can see is-----
DO NOT GET PULLED OVER DOING 45 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Once your scooter does over 35 MPH a new can is opened........
At that point, some heavy tickets for --- No MC Lisense, Insurance, Registration, Title, Helmet..... That's just the start. Impound, Towing, Court/Attorney fees can be staggering.... 6 or 7 thousand dollars later you may decide a cheap scoot was not the best idea.....
Just be careful out there. I know it's very commen to mod a scooter to " keep up with traffic " ( I Do )
GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I say get a 150 man, they are more reliable than getting a 50 and putting a bbk on it. a 150 will last for years and years possibly decades depending on the quality and how well you take care of it. If you just want a reliable speedy ride get the 150 if you don't care if will last longer than a decade get a chinese one and tools.
If you really just want to do 45+ on a 50cc you should get at least a 72cc, though I would go ll out get the 80+cc especially if hills will be a common factor. Replace everything in the CVT with quality performance parts that will hold up to the new torque and will match your riding conditions and style. Try to get a good understanding of how the CVT works and what it does in different parts of your ride. Get a good filter, a lot of people say UNIs are very loud, but if you tune it well it can be almost silent except accelerating under load. Experiment with jets, don't just settle for what the kit comes with. Get a good keihin carb, they have adjustable needles and fuel/mix screw open for adjustments as well.

I started on a 50's for the same reason, no legal requirements. Like I said a 50 is fun till you get cuaght going 17mph up those hills. So what's the first thing you do? Start dumping $$ into it to make it 'better'. I ended up with several hundred $$ worth of parts just to make my rides tolerable, 45 top speed and could pull hills at 30.
If you're already looking for speed go for that 150, the performance market is huge and seems to be the way everyone's going now. Not sure about your state but here you just take the written test, skills test and POW you're legal. Registration and insurance cost me around 175$ per year. Knowing you're legal is priceless.

So far I like LAIN's answer, but I don't understand it. Replace the CVT. That's the tranny? Or the clutch? He says I should get a UNI, but what is a UNI? Eunuch But a eunuch has no balls? The jets thing is fine. A whole set of them is cheap, and a 72BBK is cheap. Thanks for the link itistheride.boards.net/thread/8603/scooter-45mph-easy-taotao-genuine?page=1#ixzz3l0YHULFG big time. I want to just toss a couple hundred at an ATM50, but small 72CC or such so it will last a while. I really don't want a 150. The last bike I got rid of was a 2 year old Ninja 250 SE in Green. I want a 50cc that can do 45mph on a flat surface with no wind. But 48 wouldn't hurt. -Joe

... I want the 50cc for Michigan's "mopeds don't require insurance, a title, a license plate or a helmet" .... Michigan Law: www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/mcl/pdf/mcl-act-300-of-1949.pdf257.32b “Moped” defined. "Moped" means a 2- or 3-wheeled vehicle to which both of the following apply: (a) It is equipped with a motor that does not exceed 100 cubic centimeters piston displacement and cannot propel the vehicle at a speed greater than 30 miles per hour on a level surface. (b) Its power drive system does not require the operator to shift gears Anything that can do 40 mph is a motorcycle. If a cop that didn't get any the night before catches you, depending on his attitude you will get a big ticket or he will call for a tow and impound the bike and you get to walk home. Get your motorcycle endorsement, get a 150cc scoot that can do 45 mph without strain.

You will get better fuel economy and reliability from a 150 or 250 without all the tinkering.
Once you mod the bike to go over 30 it requires a motorcycle license along with at least liability insurance and your health insurance may not cover any injuries you sustain while riding an uninsured motorcycle.
Many health policies in the fine print have clauses rescinding coverage if you are injured while engaging in an extreme activity or are breaking the law. You also should consider any negative impacts this could have on life insurance coverage that protects your family.

In MA they are classified as limited use motorcycles once you mod a 50cc to go over 30.
