I live in Las Vegas,
5 days a week I take my father to work in the early morning,
For the last 4 days I have seen an abandoned scooter on the commute.
This little 50cc china scoot is parked in front of school on a somewhat major intersection and obviously been left for dead in a not so decent part of town...
Me and my father joked around the first day we saw it, "Lets drive the wagon tomorrow and pick it up".
Now, a few days later, it's still sitting and obviosuly "tampered" with during the night.
I am REALLY tempted to go ahead and pick it up....... just for parts or maybe a project. (It's in really rough condition)
My Dilema/Question, Should I go ahead and pick it up? My father said if it had the police Orange warning sticker it should be OK. But, I don't want to be a thief or involved with a stolen vehicle situation.......
Should I report it to the police ( lost and found sort of thing ) Just leave it be and not worry. Or go ahead and take it?
Not real sure what the laws are about this sort of thing....... It's not a big deal but, I would like to give it new life if I could. Or just not worry and move on.

Just forget about it, it may be already be stolen, or bait scoot. You don't want to get caught up in legal issues now.

I don't know about Nevada, but in PA it's a motor vehicle, and the last thing you want to be tangled up in is legal woes.
Call the cops and see what they say.... and document it.

Never thought about the "bait" situation......
At some point, it will be towed ( @tax payers expense ) then probably sit in a wherehouse until auction anyway.
I just hate seeing something I KNOW I can fix beeing mistreated.
Good intentions can backfire................

Take a ride dowm by the homeless hangouts near the interstate and MLK Blvd. There's a junkyard with close to a hundred scooters. I'm sure your abandoned find will be there soon.

Bonanza/ Washington and Main ST.--- Right next to Palm Mortuary and the Indian Tribal smoke shope........ Tent city
I know the area all to well.......
Sad indeed.
Tourists should keep to the strip or Fremont. 1 block North is a totally different Vegas experience.........

Or just not worry and move on. your best bet would be to leave it alone. you could legally take possession of it but you must notify the police. after that you must safegaurd it for a certain length of time, probably 30 days, and make every reasonable effort to contact the owner. the real problems would arise if said owner does indeed show up to claim the scoot, you would be liable for all the damage and missing parts, even though you never did anything to it except bring it home. save yourself a lot of headaches, leave it be

Why shouldn't he just report it to the cops? Do it pretty much just like he did here--"driven by it the past five days and it's sitting there unmoved, so obviously been abandoned." I believe if you turn in the lost/abandoned thing, you get first dibs on it when it becomes available.

Hey Jerryscript, thanks for the tip. I didn't know there was a scooter scrap yard in town, other than some of the towyards, who seem to have hundreds of scooters that they don't seem to let go of.

I don't know if they allow picking, I just noticed the scooters a couple months ago when I was heading downtown.

Here you report it to the Police, wait for them to pick it up, record the VIN and give them your info. If they can't locate the owner within days they may let you have it for parts giving you a receipt for the bike however you will not be able to easily get a title for it. Best advice though is to let it go. My nephew tried the "But it had already been stolen by someone else" line on the judge he was brought before and that did not work out well at all. He would run the other way now and not even give it a second glance.

I was reading on 'Scooter Riders' about this guy who's been seeing a scooter with nothing obviously wrong with it sitting outside a gas station for over a month, he was very curious why it was there and I was curios why nobody has stolen it. Anyway, one day he comes by and the scoots gone? Don''t know what happened to it........ Then a week goes by and the scoot shows up sitting in the same place again?

The station employees know nothing about it. All I'm saying is I don't like to leave sight of my scoot even for a moment, C/L is peppered with 'stolen scooter' ad's. However... If it was to get stolen, then I could justify a replacement !! Hmmm?
