I'm reviving a dead scoot.....
It's just a 139qmb China 50cc. It was working fine untill the battery died. Then, parked in a garage for the past few years. I am just now getting around to it. Today I am draining the old gas as a first step.
I know I need to clean out the tank and carb (sitting for years with fluids from 2012) ( I am familiar with scooter basic repair) ...... Any Hints, Tips, Tricks, or links to get started?
This maybe an ongoing project with a budget of $0.00

Don't everyone rush in to help at the same time now...... I just removed and drained the gas tank of it's 3 year old gas. Gotta love that smell, second only to brake fluid. Tomorrow the carb comes off and although I hate to spend money, A can of carb cleaner will be bought to flush out the system...... Nothing quite like that ethanol buildup to hinder startup. I expect a decent greenish color Good Luck and be safe out there!!! |

Check as well the tires, valve stems, fuel lines, engine and gear oil, brake fluid, caliper and drive belt.

Also, check for animals or insects nesting on the exhaust and dark places.

Thanks!!!! Tires are decent, (Need air of course). They were filled with nitrogen so loss of pressure is minimal but, I thank you for the valve stem comment. (I did not think of that) The rubber ones are indeed cracked-- Back when I was really into scooters, a website sold metal valve stem replacements- I forget the site name (I think Chick was in the address) Anyone know what I'm talking about? Oil -Gear and engine were changed every 600 miles on the odometer. 4943 miles are on the scoot when parked. So, indeed some fluids will be changed. Fuel lines are good but, will be replaced at a later time I admit brakes are a bit of an issue... Never had ANY maintenance done but, for now my goal is a simple start up..... I do have a new drive belt ( I bought one before it was parked and never installed it) Maybe I should scrap it and start fresh...... Also, Thank you for the rodent comment Ricardo... That is not a thing I thought of, although the garage is known to have house mice, no wires look to be damaged and the exhaust is clean---- The rats were living in a couch and the mercury cougar parked next to the scoot.... Unfortunately, if it's really been sitting for several years I fear simply 'cleaning" the carb will be, at best, stopgap. The diaphragm, for example, will soon tear. Fuel cutoff plunger for sure gone. The idle circuits in the carb will be pretty difficult to clean. You will need a rebuild kit (though I have no doubt you can get it 'running" ...)
If you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner this can be done. Otherwise, save the cleaner and get a new carb. Many of us have old 24mm carbs from pre-BBK days that you can use instead. I don't know if that's too big for a 50cc or not, but I'd go that route before trying to fix the carb.
The oils should be changed, but only the brake fluid is likely to be really bad. I would for sure change out all the rubber hoses (gas and vacuum).

WOW, rcq went all ultrasonic cleaner on me..... Seems like a decent idea but, I live in Las Vegas. China scooter parts are an easy get. I prefer a wire brush and carb cleaner -_-
The idle circuit in the carb is not that difficult to clean my friend. Do you own a shop? That kind of talk seems like an upsell when fresh gas could do the same thing in conjunction with a small wire to clean the jet..... JMHO. We will see what happens in the next few days.
Brakes are a definite issue Thank You for the heads up!!!!!!
For now a start condition will be the goal. BTW, Is JR or alleyoop still around? How about Luke or Bluefront? (past forum members)

I made no tangent... Just providing My opinion good sir. You have not disproved my opinion. If needed a carb repair kit is easy enough to get..... I assume an Ultrasonic cleaning would cost a bit more than $0.00 thus my response. Please do not underestimate new members.
NO, I Meant JR. How do I know these names you ask??? (one of those folks is not likely to be posting anytime soon) Like I said before it looks like a decent group of people are on this forum now....
You are recommending an Ultrasonic cleaning and Carb replacement before you know if the old one is working or not...... Seems like a suggestion from a shop owner IMHO. I definitly need new parts in your opinion.
I thank you for your suggestions. a 50cc carb rebuild kit maybe needed but, I am NOT that far yet.
I will get back to you if needed.

Thanks for the link!!!!!! Blue is not really my color scheme (black and silver) But, that is for sure needed. It's a rainy day in Vegas after a Blue Moon...... Spending today indoors and relaxing. Update--- Pulled off the carb yesterday----- I am VERY surprised!!!!! I need to figure out how to post pics but, -----Remember, This scoot has sat in a garage for at least 2 years--( around the time this forum was created and ScootDawg died) what would you expect to see in the float bowl? A nice greenish tinge or crud build up? To my pleasant surprise, Not a speck of crud... The jets are almost brand new, Float bowl and internals immaculate!!!!! The inside carb circuits are clean as could be to my surprise, Sea Foam is indeed a wonderful product!!!! A cap full with every tank of gas can do wonders IMO. No need for a can of carb cleaner or Super sonic cleaning as the internals are indeed spotless.... Pics coming ASAP... only because I could NOT beleve what I found inside!!! Even the rubber seals are in GREAT shape. A bit of WD40 is all that was needed.... I was Genuinely surprised as I expected much more work to be needed. Lesson learned--- Preventative maintenance does work Still waiting for a new battery but, I am tempted to try a start condition without one......... |

Of course don't buy an ultrasonic cleaner if you don't have one , lol. 3 year old gas in a carb is never a good thing. I just cleaned a carb with 1 yr old gas and it was gummed up beyond belief. So if your wanting to start fresh like you said , I would check the carb and if its gummed up pretty bad I would either buy a rebuild kit or a new carb. Other than hoses , fluids , and ,drive belt , everything else should be fine. Of course the battery is more than likely junk. |
