This one hit close to home: m.reviewjournal.com/news/las-vegas/man-was-shot-death-after-he-stole-scooter-metro-saysI lived in the apartments next to the ones where this happened close to 20 years ago, only a few hundred feet from the spot. It was never the best of neighborhoods, and after the Showboat Casino closed down, it only got worse. I live on the other side of town now, but seeing such a senseless situation somewhere you lived still hits you.

I wouldn't shoot somebody for stealing my truck or scooter. I guess we don't know if the owner was assaulted by the thief. If somebody breaks into my house, I will not hesitate.

The article states that the thief was shot while fighting with the owner so when he was confronted instead of just leaving the scooter and running off he fought to keep his trophy. The owner now facing injury or potentially death at the hands of the now violent thief ended the fight with a gunshot. The thief had a choice when caught, flee or fight and unfortunately he chose to fight.

I remember a story out of Florida years ago, where a thief was confronted a an armed home owner, and received a "Warning shot" in his back

I also live in Vegas.... Born and raised.
A person shot for theft already had justice before the courts were involved.... Just saying Mr. Crawford.
How about a follow up on this story? Or posting the Motorcycle/ Bicycle/ Pedestrian accident stats this year? 12 folks were hit in July alone........crossing the street.
You are more likely to be injured riding on a daily basis..... Gun ownership only raises the chance of deadly force being used...... Just pointing out an opinion.
Good Luck and be safe. ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE OTHER GUY

ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE OTHER GUY I agree, and I try to let jaywalking tourists know our leading cause of death is jaywalking plus tourist drivers looking at all the neon and not the road!

Indeed my friend.. I can let the tourists slide on rules sometimes (not everyone lives in a hotel) Locals that step into traffic or drive while on the phone is my own personal pet peeve and completely different. I watched a bicyclist get hit on MLK and Carey about 2 weeks ago. Bikes and humans are not supposed to bend like that........ I wish that image could be forgotten. Crosswalks are there for a reason--- all too often they are not used. It's just sad people have to pay the ultimate price for a lack of patience. Riders have been hit hard this year (no pun intended) Keep the distractions down to a minimum and be safe out there. A thief gets what they deserve at times but, NOBODY should die for transportation. JMHO GOOD LUCK ALL!!!!!!

What maybe it was his first time but don't you think if he heard that people stay in jail longer maybe he would think twice. And when there was a draft many young people were serving the country not stealing. many young people hang around and get into trouble uncle sam took care of most problems that we now put up with and say he was to young to understand. Give me a break

Long jail terms DO NOT prevent crime...
During the draft, many kids were also dodging it....
Just because you are supposed to do something doesn't mean it will be done.
Sorry for going so off topic. I apologize and feel for the loss of all people.. Luck runs out at some point and a price is paid.
Sad day for all involved I'm sure.

Remember the man was not apparently shot for attempting to take the scooter he was shot when he fought with or attacked the owner when he was confronted while stealing the bike. If someone catches you stealing and you escalate it to assault then you are putting your life needlessly at risk.
Someone chose to steal and then when caught they chose to physically assault the owner over a scooter. The reasonable expectation would be for the thief to drop the bike and run. Now if the owner shot him in the back after he abandoned the bike and started to run away that would be different but from what was in the details of the news article that does not appear to be the case here.
