Yesterday night I was riding back home when some unknown slippery stuff made my scoot loose traction and slipped hitting the curb, when the scoot hit the curb it bounced over the air and fell over my left leg, now I have two sets of knees on my left leg , leg bones snapped in half between the knee and the foot, now I have to get an operation, hopefully on monday, to install pins on my bones to put them back together; I'll be sporting a set of crutches for several months. The scooter fork and the plastics are destroyed, provably the front rim too, not sure how the engine is doing, didn't see any oil leaks, just fuel leaks, probably a fuel line disconnected with the impact, I won't be able to fix this thing (if possible) until I can recover from the injuries. I was wearing a motorcycle vest, full face helmet, knee and shin protectors, Kevlar jeans and leather gloves, the only missing thing on my armor was a nice set of motorcycle boots, that was one of the items on the top of my wish-list, they could have prevented the broken leg

Oh ricardo, sorry doesn't even start to describe how I feel for you, hon'. I'll pray that your surgery goes easily, and your recovery quickly. You do exactly what your dr says to do. And you'll be back scootin' soon enough. >'Kat

Geez RG, when I read this I was in a state of shock! Nightmare stuff. I can't imagine what you must be going through right now. Like kat said, follow your doctor's orders and heal, then if you feel like "saddling up" again, make sure and get them boots. I hope all is going as well as can be expected, and you make a full recovery.

Jeez, that's terrible. Get well soon and don't be so hard on yourself. Boots probably wouldn't have prevented your broken leg. Unless your footwear made you slip to start the process? Even with boots you can still slide on some slippery enough crap that's on our roads.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your words.
I won't give up riding, accidents can happen anywhere, the only thing one can do is to be prepared when they happen, and avoid unnecessary risks, it could have been worse if I didn't have my gear on, use all your gear all the time.
Cheers.

Very sorry about your accident and injuries, Ricardo. I have hit the "slick stuff" in a car a few times, but fortunately, never on my scoot. I skidded through a red light on an oil spot but luckily, no damage or injuries. Just out of curiosity, do you think the accident would have been less severe if you were riding one of the trike scooters like a Polaris or Ice Bear? Trikes appear a little safer when hitting an ice patch. Keep us updated on your recovery progress.

The rear tire slipped, a trike wouldn't have had troubles, maybe it would have made it wiggle or do a half turn; scooters have most of its weight concentrated on the rear tire, since that's the place where the engine is attached, I've had the rear wheel loose traction before, but not so much like this time.

Wow, THAT sucks, BIG TIME! Have a bone, as a pat on the back for your broken one!
You were well equipped. I also doubt boots would have prevented the fracture. Your accident was all riders' worst nightmare... There is very little defense against it, especially at night. Oil, wet leaves, loose gravel... All can hide in plain sight and booby-trap a ride.
If it makes you feel any better, I've been riding more than fifty years, and only came across such slippery stuff three times. Once, in Chicago... ICE under a freeway overpass in 1964 which dumped me and my chopper, once in 1968 with oil on a fast 4-lane curve, sending me and my Honda 305 Super-Hawk into a donut, ending up backwards against a used-car dealer building and once 6 years ago on my Xingyue 150... Broad daylight and I don't know WHAT the slippery stuff was. Again, the good Lord kept me from serious injury but usually you DO get hurt and wreck your ride when it happens.
Oh, yeah... and then there's angled railroad crossings, wet manhole covers... and now in my "hood" monster chuck-holes from flooding.
You were dressed WAY better than most of us, and it's a doggone shame you did the "face-plant". It truly falls into the category of "bad karma" or "poop happens"...
Many of your fellow riders and I are praying for a FAST recovery for you! I usually sign off with "ride safe" but you were riding safe, and just bit the biscuit anyway. It happens. You'll heal, and be back on the road soon!
Stay well, and be blessed!

I'll go along with Leo on sometimes not knowing what the slippery stuff was. I slid out in the roundabout, back tire just suddenly slid sideways out from under the rest of me and Peej. Scraped up Peej's left side floorboard but my gear kept me totally unharmed. Far as I saw, there was no sand, no dirt, no nothing. A bike-cop later said it might have even been a fall leaf blew under my tire just then and stole the traction.
I'm glad you had on as much gear as you did, so you didn't leave behind skin or worse.

Condolences.
Still on the heal from going down at 40 mph a little over a month ago. No broken bones or bad road rash and the boots did protect my ankles/feet.
The irony was the first stop was to replace the front tire I had slide out on me and the second for that day was the sale on Kevlar Jeans with Knee Armor at Cycle Gear. Wish I had gotten the jeans before riding the bike as they would have prevented the knee injury that has been very slowly healing.
