Tired looking on Google with no luck I've seen plenty of how tos that say to set the lashing at .003 and .005 What I'm wondering is is this just the norm or does it vary based on different mods/elevation etc?

.003inch/.005inch is for a 150cc. .003"/.003" is a 50cc

Its sort of a guideline . I set mine at .004 and .004 . the intake a little tighter but still at .004.

Experiment to find what works best for you and your ride. Try one adjustment one day, see how it runs and idles and all, then another day try another adjustment and so on until you find the best. I say do it day by day because you have to adjust them cold, it may only take a few hours to cool it down from a long day, but I just personally like doing it at the beginning of the day and waiting till the next to take it apart again etc lol.

.004 is the smallest measurement i have so i've always set both to .004 on my 50cc. on my 150 i set to .005. it's such a small difference it doesn't matter much. just know, too tight will effect performance and too loose will cause excessive wear.

Lol, same here . .004 is the smallest I have. Advance auto here in my area didn't have any smaller , oil
