I bought a 2013 taotao150 evo used private party. Ran fine for a couple of days, was a little hard to start but ran fine, found out the battery was just old and weak and wouldn't hold a charge well. Replaced battery. After that it rode fine for about 2 days and then it had trouble starting, when I finally got it started, when I applied the throttle quickly it would bog down and die. Also smelled gas strongly. Did some research, and seeing how it had sat for about 6mos, I sent it off to a local shop to have the carb thoroughly cleaned. Got it back, fired up well, took off out of the drive way, rode it around the block. Came to a stop at the house, it died and couldn't get it started again. Could smell gas strongly again.
So I decided, with it, bought a new carb, fuel lines, vacuum lines, fuel filter, spark plug, cap and wire, dic. Installed them all and it fired up beautifully and idled great after adjusting the idle (new carb). Idled for quite the while, revving slowly as well as aggressively and seem to respond well.
Starting pisspouring so I pulled it inside before I could test drive. Hour or so later it was hard to start again. Got it started once and died quickly...
What is going on with this thing? Running out of parts to replace!

Is the fuel tank mounted high in the back or in the floorboard area? And what kind of fuel control device do you have. Manual shutoff valve or vacuum petcock?
The floats in your carb may need adjusting.

Running out of parts to replace! Are you using new gas? You could have bad gas (that sounds funny)....  Also, these tanks rust out easy... It's possible you have particulate that's clogging up your new filter. Also, you may wanna remove all your emissions stuff and eliminate the possibility of something like a bad fuel check valve etc etc..... |

Its burned through a whole tank, filled it with ethanol free 87. Still new to the whole scooter thing so I'm a bit unsure of the emissions your are referring. |

Alleyoop (The Admin for this board) created a great thread on scooter doc forum on how to remove it. Here's a linkAnd here's a you tube video: Removing the emissions cost nothing if you can fabricate a block-off plate yourself. The emission stuff on these are notorious for being problematic. BTW, Make sure you visually inspect your gas tank inards best you can... And another BTW That strong gas smell you talk of, that could be an indicator of that it's running too rich.. When an engine is running too rich, it has a certain smell... |

That is what I assumed that it was too rich which is why I bought a whole new carb with a new electric choke(controls the air:gas ratio from what I understood) will take a look at it. I added seafoam to the gas as well. When I got it and when I filled it up. Transparent gas lines aren't showing any debris.

The electric chokes (or auto enricher) only function is when you start you scooter.. The carburetor itself has an air/fuel mixture screw... Have you tried adjusting that screw yet?  Adjust the one that says "Low speed Mixture Adjustment"....... You also have an Idle Screw you may need to adjust....  |

I would do a total cleaning of the entire fuel system,,tank vent,tank to carb inlet first.
That way you have a clean foundation to start on from there just work your way down stream....from the jets and ports to the valves and so on...

So with brand new carb, lines, I reckon drain petcock and clean it and how do I go about cleaning a gas tank? |

did the shop do anything besides clean the carb? i would do a valve adjustment first? No, I removed the carb and took it to them so I could save labor cost. I've read about valve adjustment. Also figured I'd change motor and gear oil (can't hurt). Don't know if there's a safety switch if they are too low/dirty. |

So with brand new carb, lines, I reckon drain petcock and clean it and how do I go about cleaning a gas tank? I agree with Jersey. I worked on a scoot with bad gas recently. After I cleaned the carb it went bad again right away. I found yellow gunk in the carb bowl. I cleaned it again and same thing. I finally took the tank off, rinsed it out with gas a few times, shaking it around, put a new filter on it and cleaned the carb again. As far as I know it's fine now. What a headache. I wish I had cleaned the tank first. |
