I have a 1997 Honda elite ch80. For some reason when I am going down the road if I hit a bump my engine looses power briefly. It really has me puzzled, I have checked all my wires they are tight with no bare ones. I swapped out my coil thinking maybe the end was bad, I have taken the carb off disassembled it and cleaned it and nothing has made a difference. I also checked the fuel line for kinks. If I sit on my scoot and have the engine running and bounce on it the engine doesn't cut out, if I go over a railroad track or hit a bump while moving it cuts out.
Any suggestions

Ha how can you go around railroad tracks?

Presuming it SUDDENLY cuts out at the point when yiou hit the bump it's not likely to be a fuel problem.

I had a similar problem, the faulty piece was the spark plug connector on the coil. Have you checked your carb for vacuum leaks? loose CDI connection? battery connections? ground connection?

I also had a similar problem, my spark plug boot was loose enough to cause it, even though it felt ok. Replaced it and haven't had the issue for 6 months, so I'm sure it was the problem in my case.

I've checked the coil wires that plug into it, they are in good shape and tight, I replaced the plug boot and swapped out plugs with an old one just for the heck of it. I can't figure it out. I even ran it on the kickstand and had a friend hold it half throttle and I took a rubber mallet and tapped on the carb, then coil, then the CDI unit and it never missed a beat

Rcq is right , its not going to be a fuel issue. I recently had an issue with a bare wire grounding out on the frame. I've also had the loose plug boot. Have you checked the pickup for the flywheel ? Possibly something grounding out behind the front fairing ?

Your wires are tight, but are any of them frayed or sound like they are crispy on the inside when handling them? What about burn marks or exposed wiring? Does it happen every time? What about when you push it off the center stand?

Ian, I have checked all wires, none are bare or in bad shape, it doesn't bother it when I drop it off the stand. And I checked the wires by the flywheel and they look ok to. I even took a spray bottle of water last night and went through and sprayed everything to see if I had an spark or short but didn't find any

Well if every wire is 100% good, I would move on to checking all hoses by hand by covering the ends and blowing into them to see if air flows or not. If no air flow with the end covered it should be good. If there is air flow with the end covered/plugged then the hose is no good. If those are good I would then check for loose engine bolts or leaks.

Did you check all the wiring under the front plastic ? Where the regulator is ?

Another thing I noticed is when I take off it cuts out for a second before I get full power. And at top speed (around 45) it cuts out a tiny also. I've taken the carb off and checked hoses and the intake tube. I haven't had any of the front plastic off yet as soon as I get the extra time I will, it seems like quite a job just from the looks of it

You need to look at these wires as well when trying to find and solve what seems like a wiring issue. If you are feeling lazy instead of screwing in the front fairing just tape it on for test runs. I actually have had my front fairing taped on for many months since I got my scoot broken into and torn apart. I can't screw mine in anymore, all the screw holes are torn off, but you can use the tape method for a long time is what I am saying without issues. Having screws to hold the front on is always good though haha. The things you mention above here, where it cuts out, the thing to look for is a pattern. Does it ALWAYS cut out at those points???
