I have a gy6 with the 1p39qmb engine. Its a taotao vip. I have recently gutted the exhaust and put a performance cdi and coil. Ran fine until i put an aftermarket air filer on the ran like crap. I have a bigger carb on the way but is there anything i can do till then? Right now i put the stock air box back on it. It is cold out to right now in michigan dont know if that has to do with it. Cause the stock air box has a tube that goes in it that supplies warm air but it has to be deleted once i put the aftermarket filter on. Just dont make sense to me. And with the new cdi i have to use the kick start to start it why is that?

Maybe a bigger main jet in the existing carb?

If you replace the stock airbox, you are usually replacing it with a Uni type air filter. These allow a lot more air than the stock airbox does, which means you need to upjet your carb (no need for a larger carb), or restrict the air intake to prevent so much air from getting in.

What size carb did you get ? Jerry is right you could have fixed it without buying a bigger carb , at the same time the bigger carb may give you a little better performance , but it still must be tuned property with the right size jets for your setup and adjusting the air fuel screw. If you stock carb was sealed , you would have to unseal it but the new carb should come unsealed already . let us know how it goes.

Wrong CDI perhaps? Could be a bad CDI cable too

If it wont start via electric start, and only by kickstart, it is not the CDI. It is most likely either the valves out of adjustment, or the plug boot is loose.

If it wont start via electric start, and only by kickstart, it is not the CDI. It is most likely either the valves out of adjustment, or the plug boot is loose. I've had that happen before. Sometimes if your boot doesn't have a good grip it will slide off the end of the plug but still be in the space where it should be sticking out of the side of the engine cooling shroud. If this is the case it may APPEAR to be connected but may just be touching the end of the plug to the end of the metal or between the metal and the plastic in the boot. Sometimes if it is slightly disconnected it can still be started with enough power, but this would strain most of your ignition system and could cause more issues down the line so it is worth checking out. Just reach around underneath and see if the boot is on there tight or not.

Just curious, how do you know the new carb has larger jets? Pretty much all stock 24mm carbs (stock carb size for 150cc gy6) have the same size jets, and I've honestly never seen any carb for sale that had the jet sizes listed. Nor have I ever seen a carb listed that says "now with bigger jets". Not to say finding one listed like that is impossible, just would like to know where you found it. Also out of the 3 carbs I have bought none of them had what size the jet was listed on the jet or anywhere on the packaging material. When you buy aftermarket jets they all have or should have what size they are stamped on the jet.
You can get a set of 10 jets from parts for scooters.com for less than 20 bucks shipped. A lot faster and a lot cheaper than just buying a new carb. Furthermore, if you are going to be modding your motor you really need a set of jets so you can adjust your tune right. Just because you are getting a carb "with bigger jets" still does't mean they will be the right size for your application.
Right now your motor is running like crap due to it being lean, and lean is very bad for these motors. It causes them to over heat. If you don't fix it and like immediately you risk destroying your motor. It really doesn't take much at all. In cold weather you might get away with a few miles before you start to damage your engine. The double edge sword is your motor needs to be tuned richer for riding in the cold so the colder it is the leaner your stock carb is going to run.
