Here in pa we have to have insurance . mine is $75 a year. What does insurance cover on a scooter? Why would someone on a scooter get insurance? Collision insurance? I have fire theft collision and vandalism on my Vespa. John

I'm interested in how insurance works with scooters. If someone steals your scooter insurance buys you a new one, or just pays for parts of a new one? What about vandalism, do they replace the parts, and do they get the parts or do you have a choice in supplier?

We legally have to have insurance , just like a car. You can choose the coverage just like a car. You can get full coverage which will cover your scoot and other vehicles or structures if you would happen to wreck . or you can get something like liability , which will only cover other vehicles or structures , but will not cover your scoot .

I would imagine you would have to find a shop for an estimate of the damage . most insurance companies send a check with the name of the shop and your name , so you both have to sign it in order to cash it. I would expect the insurance company to buy you a new scoot if stolen , as long as theft is covered in the policy. Don't you have insurance and on your scoot ?

No, it's not required here, and I haven't really looked into it due to lack of funds, if I can't pay for gas most of the time I doubt I'll have enough for insurance until I get a new job haha

Ok ordered the extra belt.. Wait... You have insurance? Aren't those expensive? I was thinking to get just roadside assistance instead. It's about 1,000 per year. 80% is insurance on myself in case of injury, the rest is on the bike for collision, fire, theft, vandalism, etc. We pay liability here so if you don't cover yourself, and you are hit and the person runs or does not have insurance, or you just crash like into a tree, then you are responsible for your own medical bills. That's why I carry coverage both on the bike and myself. If it's totaled then they'll pay you for the value of the scooter.

I thought insurance was legally necessary for an on road registered vehicle in the whole US. What happens if you cross state line ?

Hey lain , is your scoot registered as a moped or a motorcycle ? The DMV told me to register my scoot as a moped. When I asked if I needed a motorcycle endorsement or insurance they said they aren't required for scooters, but a good idea.

I looked up MA's DMV. and if registered as a moped your OK but if registered as a scooter , then it would fall under any motorcycle rules and laws. If the scoot is 50cc and under it can be registered as a moped even though it is not a moped, lol.

The DMV told me to register my scooter as a moped also,,she handed me a moped plate then I told her it was a 150cc so she took the plate back and gave me a cycle tag for $65...I should have kept my mouth shut but did not want the hassle down the road,,especially when i roll a cop at 60MPH,,how do you explain that one...lol

Turn a ticket into a warning, but cops don't bother around here, even with my underbody lights which are illegal here. I park it right in front of a police station down the street from my house when I don't have my chain and I'm going to the store, have even talked to a couple and they say they just don't have the time for such trivial things. They told me as long as I don't create distractions for other drivers and accidents to just stay out of trouble haha.
