Had a bit of rain in Vegas the past couple of days. I got worried last night when I got home because I barely had enough shop towels left to wipe her down with. Made me wonder, how obsessive are other scooter owners with maintaining their rides?
I love to wrench on mine weekly, and I do wipe off spots daily and wipe her down after every wet ride. Am I at the extreme end, do you fret when you see a smudge on your front fender as well? Or do you put gas in and enjoy the ride, only worrying when something doesn't seem right?
If you saw someone taking off on your scooter, would this be you?

I was obsessive about my Corvette in the 80s and 90s. I get attached to my scooter, but thats about as far as it goes.

I don't ride in the rain so water/road grime isn't an issue. I also park inside a shop. Now the shop does have open windows near the roof line so pollen is an issue. I wipe her down when ever she starts looking a lil yellow. Now I'm a compete nutjob about how it runs. Since my scoot is very sensitive to temp changes, I tune the air/fuel and RPM at east once a day...and thanks to Florida's crazy weather it can be 50f in the morning but by noon t's in the upper 70s causing me to tune it several times a day. Now if, I'm not going anywhere one day I won't touch it.

I really don't mind changing the rollers and belt, since it always runs a bit different and makes the ride fresh again. Oil change is somewhat obsessive due to past crank failures. I'll wipe it down and make it look sexy a few times a year.
Now, if a few things break or fail within a short period of time, it can get frustrating. "Really? AGAIN?!?" Sometimes I don't even want to touch this scoot. I mean I've had this scoot for almost 7 years, so the only thing that ever gets under my skin is major crank failure--- which is either $320 for a new engine (after shipping) or about $150 for a rebuild. So I'll keep obsessing about oil changes for now. I shoot for about every 500 miles.
EDIT: Although we can minimize some of the frustration by having a spares around: bulbs, belt, throttle cable, the "v" guides in the variator, ignition coil, and maybe even a cdi. Anything that can keep you off the road for a few days waiting on parts, if you have to.

I'm fairly obsessive about Betsy Mae because she's a machine. And she's a cheap little machine, and my cheap little machine isn't going to get tortured by running her in the rain where all that gritty water is going to get blasted into every nook and cranny of her delicate body and electrical system. And her one little cylinder has a big job to do so I stress it as little as possible and change her oil regularly. And I clean her often as it is easier to do if done before she gets really bad. But right now she is all full of dust as February was too cold to ride. But this weather can't last forever so fairly soon I'll give her a bath, change her oil, charge up her battery, clean her air filter, drip a few drops of oil here and there, check her valves, check under her belt cover, and do whatever else I see so she will happily get me where I need to go for another riding season. My car is 27 years old, I wonder how long I can get Betsy Mae to last?

Me and my scoot are 1. If she ain't feel in' it: I ain't feel in' it. The slightest variation in performance and I am bending her over....lol
Edit: If that was my bike I would have knocked dudes head off and spun-out on his face.

I like my scooter alot,,but there is always this kinda gritting my teeth, looking at it from the corner of my eye,,knowing its a chinese work of art..so Im always a bit leery about how its going to treat me,it has not gained my full trust yet,,and may never,,so i cant be too sweet to it.
I do wash,degrease,change oil,belt,sliders,lube cables,pivot points,bushings,and all that stuff on a regular basis,,but it aint no Honda!

I'm a fair weather scoot-driver, so rain's not usually an issue. But the two times I got caught by drizzle, then yes, I wiped Peej dry.
Otherwise, being also totally non-mechanicky, I just put in gas and drive.
And I'm with mopojo--I would tackle any bastard that tries to steal my scoot. Or car. Or flutes. Or anything else I own that's worth a bit of money. A roused cat is a dangerous beast, you know....

edit: omg i just watched the vid. how the heck does he not know she went down? i don't think i will ever carry a passenger, it's dangerous enough with just me.

Since my scooter is a "brand new" 5 year old model, I am dealing with a lot of age related items that need replacement just due to age, not mileage. However, everything is still shiny and clean and easy to work on, so that is a blessing.
It was a dealer demonstrator model, so kept in a garage all those years and continues to enjoy a pampered life in my garage as well.

Mine is a soldier, we have been in many battles together for almost 8000 kilometers now, like a good soldier it has several war scars and a dirty uniform. I do keep it in good mechanical shape, I don't care much about the appearance, if it doesn't look to attractive it is less likely to get stolen.
