You definitely CAN get strip LED's at auto supply stores and they're great quality. They ARE a little pricey, and selections are limited, but it's convenient. I guess I've been buying and selling on eBay for SO many years that I'm just spoiled by the low prices and having the stuff delivered to my door... Most LED's come direct from China, and the incredible variety to choose from is SO appealing... LOL! Just me... Heya! I got some LED lights at the auto parts store and wired them up on the sides of the bike where light sort of just gets absorbed like a black hole and everyone pretends they cant see me. So there's one problem addressed. I need to pick up another set of LED lights for the back trunk to tie into the brake lights. I'm not really an electrically inclined kind of guy, and I don't want to mess anything up. So I called my local Kymco shop and before I could even finish my sentence, the guy cut me off as soon as I said LED and told me they aren't interested in helping. He said I'll have nothing but electrical problems and went on to say that the electrical generator on scooters can't handle any extra electrical load whatsoever. He said he wants no part of it and won't help. He suggested I put an LED 1157 bulb in the tail light and call it good. I'm not thrilled with that answer. I'd like to wire up some LED strips that make the bike much more visible and safer on the road. Anyone have a suggestion for how to go about getting electrical wiring help? I wonder if there are any solar LED lights that would soak up enough energy during the day to run brake light LED's at night?

Quite a video!
Amazing, that parrot flying along with the scooter rider! I was wondering what COUNTRY this was filmed in, then, I saw the rifle mounted near the muffler... I guess it's just gotta be TEXAS...
Bet the heater cuts down on the road-rage reactions when the parrot cusses out surrounding drivers! LOL! The skull is a nice touch, too! I'd think twice before giving this bird-lady "the bird"... HeHeHe...
Leo in Texas...
PS: I don't have a skull for "Minnie Mouse" but I have recently scrounged up a 50's vintage CHROME SWAN with ILLUMINATED wings! SO incredibly tacky, but SO "old-school-me". Gotta figger out just where that rare monstrosity might bolt onto the old Grandvista... Hey, it WILL go well with the fishtail exhaust! Maybe? Yup!

I wonder if there are any solar LED lights that would soak up enough energy during the day to run brake light LED's at night? Oh brother! What a helpful dealer... Cheesh! I suppose they're worried about liability and such.
These scooters seem to have REALLY stout batteries AND charging systems! Even my old Chinese 150 had a load of LED's on it and they never caused any problems, or drained the battery! The LED's draw VERY little juice. They should be connected to DC current however. My old 150 had AC headlights, but as far as I can tell, the Kymco uses DC for all the headlights, tail lights, etc. So LED's can be hooked up without problems, anywhere you want them.
The only thing you need to be sure of is to connect the LED's positive to the scooter's positive leads, and grounds to a ground. I tracked down the individual wires going to my lights with a simple 12V test-probe... A wire (preferably use black for future reference) can be connected to the frame, or, as I did, tapped into any wire on the scooter that's grounded and be used for grounding all your LED's.
Then, tap the positive LED wire into the tail light, stop-light or blinker you want the LED to run with. You saw my Vegas-style rear "billboard" lights, and I've been running them now for a year with NO problems whatsoever. The little Chinese scooters can handle at least a few extra LED's, and the Kymco 250 can handle more. Even a whole strip of LED's use only a couple watts of juice.
Hooking up your LED's is easier than painting the Dinkster... Really!
With your seat-pan removed, all the rear wires are visible. You can almost tell which are the tail light, stop, and blinkers just by looking, but a test-light/probe will easily verify which is which.
You can tap into factory wires in several ways... I went the "easy" route, using those blue plastic automotive taps with little "guillotine" steel pieces you squeeze with pliers, then close the plastic locking piece to weatherproof. They are good in tight places like under the seat. And they seem to be VERY durable, better than twisting "wire-nuts" and easier than trying to cut, strip and solder.
Any questions I can help you with, just ask.
I STILL love that black paint! Ten times better than I envisioned, and I'm an artist! Woo-HOO!
Get 'er lit-up... and Ride safe!

Lookin' GOOOOOODDD!
I don't know what you tapped into for these lights, but your brake light should hook up the same way: positive LED lead to brake light wire, negative LED lead to ground.
Just remove that pesky seat-pan, and you'll find the wires going to the tail light, brake light and blinkers. I hate pulling the dang seat out, but if you need me to, I'll do it and find out what color wires go "whrere". I should have written them down when I did mine... Duh... HOLD IT... I think my shop manual has a teensy wiring diagram!
I'll see if I can find it and add to this reply for you.
OK, I found the wiring diagram but it's printed SO small that the wire colors letter-codes are broken and illegible, even under a magnifying glass. If you check the wires going to the tail light, you should be able to see them and probe with a test light to see which is the tail light, and which is the stop light. If not, I'll find them on mine and tell you the colors.
Hey, when Kymco sees your bike, they might bring back the Dink in stealth mode!

Thanks Leo! I actually ran those lights directly off the cigarette lighter adapter / charger port under the seat. I guess no one smokes cigarettes anymore. I quit smoking them back in 2012 and I assume everyone else did too. LOL! Anyhoo, as far as the brake lights go, I'm going to pick up another pack of LED lights tomorrow and I'm going to pull the seat off the scooter and by God I'm going to DO IT! No one else is going to help me, so I'm going to do it. My dad always told me "Son, if you ever need a helping hand, you need look no farther than the ends of your own arms". How right he was. I miss my pops. On another note, I had a few to drink tonight, and I went out into the garage, and I decided that I would take on the mistakes I made with the paint. There were a couple spots where the paint drooled because I was careless. I took some sand paper and I smoothed out the offending spots. I then cleaned them up thoroughly and let them dry. Then I took my trusty paint can, shook it up vigorously and carefully repainted the spots that I had screwed up. I can't believe it but now all the drools are gone!! I have a true ROAD WARRIOR bike! I took her out for a ride (before I had the alcohol drinks) and I was stopped at a light. A burly guy on a Harley pulled up next to me at the light and mumbled something to me. I tipped my visor up and said "Huh?", and he said "I thought I'd pull up next to your mean ride". Then the light turned green and I let him take off in front of me. He had a Hells Angels jacket on with an ARIZONA tag on the bottom. I don't know if he was paying me actual respect or was just making fun of me. LOL! I think he was just making fun. I guess I should count myself lucky that I didn't get shot. ANYWAY, I digress, so as I was sanding away, and repainting the mistakes I made on my initial paint job, I heard a song in my head. It was 1:30am and I couldn't really crank a radio in my garage, so I had to listen to the music in my head. And so I heard "You are my scootie, my only scootie, you make me happy when skies are gray. You'll never know dear, how much I love you, please don't take my scootie away". LOL! I've had WAY too much to drink tonight. I'm rambling. Don't mind me, I'm a total NUT! I like to think I'm an entertaining NUT! LOL!

This is why you shouldn't drink'n'post. Although yours isn't NEAR as dangerous to you as some drunk-posts I've read. And don't dismiss the biker. Some of the very worst-seeming can be the most gracious towards others. I would bet it was a combo of respect for another 2-wheel rider and enjoyment of your Dark Sith-ride. Just be very very glad you weren't on the parrotmobile! >'Kat

Scootdude,
I think the Hells Angel was on the level... really liked your ride! I remember when ALL the Hells Angels were good guys... Long time ago, but some must still be decent.
Please note: I found out that cigarette lighter only supports a TEENSY bit of juice. It's only for charging a cell-phone... If you plugged in a lighter it would fry...
I quit smoking before anyone knew it was bad for you... I couldn't afford smoking once coffin-nails hit TWENTY-FIVE CENTS a pack... Boy, THOSE were the days!
You DO need to tap into the real wiring... Yup! Last night, I got out a strong jeweler's loupe and squinted at the tiny wiring diagram in the shop manual. The .005" high letters are TERRIBLE, but it looks like (at the rear of the scooter anyway) that BROWN wires are the universal ground (but you could ground to any bolt or screw cleanly threaded into the frame).
It also appears that GREEN is the positive tail light wire and the GREEN/YELLOW wire is the positive to the stop light. I can't promise that is correct, but you won't hurt anything by tapping into them to see.
Though I had forgotten, I think you also must remove the battery to get to the wires (not difficult) and doing so didn't mess up my gauges, etc. I only had to reset the clock.
One way you might verify the wire colors would be to call a dealer (not mentioning LED's... LOL!) and ask if he'd verify the colors of the wires to all the rear lights... Tell him you're checking for a short or something. The diagram is on page 1-16 of the Grand Dink overseas (U.S.A.) shop manual, in case his copy is more legible than mine.
Good news on your paint fix! Ain't flat-paint wonderful?
Oh, AND congrats on your new job!
Ride safe!

LOL yeah I'll have to wire up the side lights more permanently. It's hooked up very temporarily right now to the charging port. It's going to be a week or so before I can tackle it since I start back to work tomorrow. I'm going to have to buy a test light and dig through the wiring harness in the back of the bike and locate the brake wire so I can hook up the brake light LED's. I hoped to get a little help from the shops here but they all avoid it like the plague. The mechanic at the Kymco shop was even bragging to me the other day about how he hooked up LED's all over his new Kymco 150cc. But the manager at that shop acted like I was asking him if I could sleep with his wife. It was really kind of incredible the angry response I got from that guy. Wow!

Scootdude,
You won't have any trouble hooking up the wiring... I'm no electrician myself... LOL! Once you get TO those pesky wires, you can see which ones head to the tail lights and turn signals. Find a ground, then just test to see which one goes to the tail light, and which one goes to the stop light.
While you're at it, I'd tap into all the wires you might want to use later... Tail, stop, left & right blinkers and a ground, then run those new wires out to where you can easily access them later, maybe inside the seat pan. THAT will save you a LOT of disassembly and fuss later on if you decide to light up the trunk, etc.
Now go knock 'em dead on that new job!
Ride safe!

Yeah this weekend when I get a little time to dig into it, I'm going to fuss with the electrical wiring and fix up the old gal. I ordered a genuine LED brake light on ebay that should come in sometime later this week. It's one of those buggers with about 40 tiny LED's all over it. It's going to really brighten up the tail and brake lights. Then I'm going to pick up some more LED strip lights and mount em up to the back trunk, and wire em up good and proper. You all know how much I love to post pics, so I'll be sure and post a bunch when I've got it all done. The new job is AWESOME! Best job I've ever had. I was lucky to get it. It was a 1 in a MILLION stroke of luck getting this job. It was like hitting the jackpot. And best of all, I get to serve active military personnel and veterans. I tried to go into the military back in 1988 and was stamped 4F and rejected. So I never got a chance to serve. So it kind of chokes me up now that I get a chance to serve in at least some sort of capacity. Cheers!

Say, BIG congrats on not just the new job, but a job you can really look forward to going to every day!
Still think you should add some gloss black accent stripes. Like maybe on the front edging? Or somewhere on the fender? Just keep it all black on black.

I'm SO glad you got a good job! Not all that easy to get one these days...
You'll be safer with some good lights UP ON THE TRUNK. And all the lights I've gotten off eBay have been very good. Had some on my old Chinese scoot for nearly 7 years with not one ever going out.
If ever you have trouble with the self-stick goo not holding (the stickum is definitely NOT as good as the LED's...) a dab of any of the modern wonder-rubber-cement glues will fix that... I've used those cements on boot-soles, lights, auto emblems etc. all with great results. Even glued broken bumper plastics on my car with no problems!
That big trunk of yours is a natural for illumination. I think it's the only one bigger than mine! On a scoot that's your "family car" it is just the thing. You can haul half of Wally World home with you... It DOES block your factory rear lights though, from tall vehicles and cars tailgating you. With bright lights on the trunk, even a tailgater has them right in his/her face. I am positive my trunk lights have prevented a few rear-enders when stopping at night.
Even though my own GV is painted white, from the REAR it's ALL flat-black.. Trunk, seat, backrest and mud-guard. "More lights, more better"... LOL! While I kept my choppers "clean and simple" my old Harley baggers were lit up like a Tijuana taxi! One of these days when it STAYS warm, I've gotta get my driving lights on, and my marvelously nostalgia-tacky illuminated swan... Be still my beating heart, "Minnie Mouse" will have her rodent-nose adorned just like my '49 Ford was in '62... The birdie will likely be ONE mod NOBODY but myself will approve of on the site... but, it's an "old-geezer" thing... LOL!
Ride safe and enjoy that warm weather!

Hey guys! How'z it goin? I know it's been a minute since I posted, but man oh man have I been busy. I got spoiled with 8 weeks off work between jobs. It's nice to be back to work. A man shouldn't lay around the house all day. The new job is just shy of 25 miles from my house. The surface streets are almost impassable because of having to go through downtown Phoenix. I took that route the other day, and almost hit some homeless bum riding his bicycle illegally across my green light. I swerved to miss him, and he threw up his arms at me like it was ME who was the idiot! He's lucky I didn't turn around and run him down! The freeway isn't much better. I have to take the I-17 truck route and it's just about suicide. Cars running bumper to bumper at 65 and 75mph, and are prone to slam suddenly on their brakes for no apparent reason. Potholes in the road big enough to swallow a VW bug, missing slabs of asphalt for 500 feet at a time. The I-17 freeway running through Phoenix is a dirty, dingy, nasty little highway that's loaded up to the gills with ill-tempered, bad mannered, rude little people clogging it all up. I take my life into my hands every single day driving back and forth to work. I'm half tempted to get a helicopter so I can skip the whole mess.

And why haven't you mounted that swan yet and posted pics?
