So here is my saga about the Dr. pulley variator installed about 1,000 miles ago. All seemed fine - G R E A T acceleration, not bad top end --- but i just couldn't get above 6,500 RPM with the 11gr sliders ... so I ordered 9gr sliders to see if that would help (side bar: the problem was the 'performance CDI). After taking the CVT cover and variator drive plate off i discovered these BADLY mangled sliders !!! HOLY COW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, maybe i put them in backwards .... but i was pretty deliberate when I put this on. Wow. Here is the variator. Note all the galling of the ramps: And here is the other face with something very interesting about the casting: Note at the place where the fingers join to the hub there is a lip. OK, so I tossed the thrashed sliders and just went with all 6 9gr sliders, A week later I had some time so I went back in to install a new belt (the original Bando had 2 troubling cracks - only 1,000 miles) and check things out. Here are the NEW sliders with only about 100 miles on them. Note the damage already: At first I thought it was the somewhat roughened surface of the ramps, but that doesn't explain the damage. Then i looked at the lip. First thought - grind that puppy down: But then I had an "ah ha!" and went digging through the parts box to find the OEM part from the original small variator that came with the scooter. Here is the OEM one (on the right) next to the (ground down) Dr. Pulley one (on the left). Note there is NO LIP on the OEM plate: And - a bit of a surprise - the OEM plate fit the Dr. Pully variator perfectly. So now I'm thinking the sliders (at low RPM) would bang against this lip and pretty quickly get boogered up. If that is true, Dr. Pulley has a SERIOUS design flaw in their variators! So, I did the best I could to polish up the ramps And put the variator back together with the somewhat damaged sliders: My guess is that with the damage already done --0- and the less than perfect ramp surfaces - this will not last long. Probably I should just order a different variator and some sliders and be ready for a change. But unless I was REALLY careless and dumb, and put TWO sets of sliders in improperly --- this Dr. P variator isn't exactly something I'd recommend very highly. Or maybe i really AM that careless and stupid .....

Who are you ordering the sliders from? Do you happen to have the original packaging they came in? Just curious if there are some counterfeit Dr Pulleys going around like all the fake belts.

Yeah - I recall when I bought this variator Alley recommended a different brand b/c it spun the weights farther out at high RPM (better ramp design, I suppose). I had already bought and paid for this Dr. Pulley one when I got the recommendation (and Alley got really mad I did not follow his recommendation), but maybe I can search back and find out what brand he recommended. If i can I'll let ya know.

Seller in China or Taiwan - came in a little plastic box with 6 individual compartments. I think Dr. P is a Taiwanese company ,.... right?

I'm thinking at the moment the problem was the variator. Take a look at the inner plate: There is (or, was, before I got to grinding) a pronounced lip (circled in red) at the base of each finger. And note how much wear there is on these bumps - must have stuck up 1/16 inch or so. The simple China OEM variator's plate was smooth all the way into the hub (see above). The photo does not do it justice - the rim was actually quite pronounced, and i'm thinking the sliders must have smacked against the discontinuity all the time. Maybe these bumps are what tore up the sliders.

I believe alleyoop recommends the Koso variators he gets from tvnacman. I use one I purchased from Scrappy's with sliders, over a year now with no problems.

THANKS, JS! You saved me a ton of thrashing around looking for an old thread.
Do you have an opinion as to what might have caused the damage I see?

I agree, those ramps look strange, they could have cause the premature wear. I bought my Koso variator from ScrappyDogScooters. BTW, I did a google search: alleyoop koso variator Found this thread from a little over a year ago: itistheride.boards.net/thread/4860/koso-variators-worth?page=1 This leads me to believe that there are a lot of fakes out there being packaged as Koso and perhaps Dr Pulley, as well as Gates belts of course.

You got a badly stamped ramp plate which should be replaced by Dr Pulley under warranty if it is really a Dr Pulley and not a counterfeit. The real ones generally hold up pretty well.
